Long letter from NSF Director Sethuraman Panchanathan, available here: https://nsf-gov-resources.nsf.gov/files/Letter-to-the-Community.pdf
π§ͺ The NSF director is lying to you.
Letβs fact check 7 claims from yesterdayβs letter to the community, while pointing out 3 critical omissions. π§΅
Pro-tip for university administrators: when the government illegally cancels your grants, your first response shouldn't be "you kind of have a point."

I almost didn't go to this because I felt so overwhelmed by all of the causes we need to fight for now.
If you're feeling this way too, know that anything you do to fight is a win.
You cannot do all the good the world needs, but the world needs all the good you can do.
Bill Nye at the Stand Up for Science rally in DC:
"What are you afraid of? What is it about the process of science, modern medicine, caring for our neighbors, or Women's History Month, that you all find so scary?"

DEI initiatives are still legal.
Universities need to stand their ground.
A Friday gift to your university's General Counsel Office - courtesy of an all star lineup of civil rights lawyers and scholars. You're going to want to read this.

Under fascism, no one is safe.
Universities stayed quiet as the admin targeted DEI & foreign aid, censored research, etc.
Now, they face devastating cuts to indirect cost rates, threatening research & operations.
Silence wonβt protect institutions. It wonβt protect people; it never does.
"Anyone who has studied science under the Nazis...cannot fail to be dismayed and alarmed at the parallels in the response so far of scientific institutions and academies to the purges and abuses of power following Trumpβs executive orders" π§ͺ #scicomm

Letter from the SSE/SSB/ASN councils on the scientific understanding of sex and gender, pls RT
Slightly annoying how many of the comments are like, "This is written so broadly it's going to even affect ME over here in chemistry" or whatever. We need to (always) stand together as scientists whether you're the target or the collateral damage.
Ah thanks for letting me know!
Screenshot of email reading: "Attn SICB Members: The past few weeks have been a stressful time in our scientific community, and we want to make our position clear: The Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology unequivocally condemns recent attacks on scientific integrity, funding for scientific research, and the importance of broadening participation in science."
Pleased to see @sicbjournals.bsky.social speak out in support of equity and integrity in science. But saying science is non-partisan is not true or meaningful when science is under political attack. Academic freedom and DEI are morally necessary ideological positions
Would love to see more clear statements and leadership like this from journals and societies
Jellyfish please :)
Would you mind adding me? Thanks!
