Now we are building a source network to fuel in-depth coverage of the nationβs emergency preparedness, disaster response and recovery infrastructure.
Emergency managers: Fill out the form below to help @propublica.org prepare to report on the next disaster.
www.propublica.org/getinvolved/...
We heard from more than 40 current and former emergency managers in 11 states about what they need to prepare for the next disaster β and what they arenβt getting.
New from me: www.propublica.org/article/emer...
NEW: Disasters are a matter of "when," not "if."
Are you an emergency manager or researcher? Help us build a national picture of the countryβs preparedness, from funding to alert systems.
Tell us what we should be covering.
NEW: Local emergency managers, the behind-the-scenes coordinators who mobilize help during disasters, have raised the same point time and again:
We need resources to protect people in harmβs way β before the harm arrives.
A really important story as we head into spring/summer storm and fire seasons with less help anticipated from FEMA.

NEW: The Trump administrationβs push for mass deportations has resulted in more than 18,000 challenges in federal court from immigrants claiming their detention is illegal.
We are tracking the increase in these cases π
1/ ProPublica collected handwritten letters in mid-January from children held at the Dilley Immigration Processing Center, the same facility where 5-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos was taken.
Hundreds of kids are still detained.
Weβll let the childrenβs words speak for themselves. π§΅
BREAKING: The two federal immigration agents who fired on Minneapolis protester Alex Pretti are identified in government records as Border Patrol agent Jesus Ochoa and Customs and Border Protection officer Raymundo Gutierrez.

NEW: Tennesseeβs speaker of the House took steps that allowed the owners of a payday lending company, Advance Financial, to keep using their stores to boost a now-defunct online sports betting enterprise.

I've been thinking about how many videos I've watched that started like Renee Good's & Alex Pretti's. People pulled from cars & accused of obstruction, grabbed after filming agents, accused of punching agents, ramming cars despite video evidence. Shot.
They survived. But the arrests were brutal
Iβve been in Minneapolis the last few days reporting on the ICE raids happening across the city. This morning federal agents shot and killed a man, identified by the AP as Alex Pretti. This marks the third shooting by federal agents since Operation Metro Surge started in Minnesota last month.
People have been asking, so we published it: The data linking generic drugs to the facilities that make them! You can download the data on GitHub.

Thanks @democracynow.org for giving me a chance to share a new @propublica.org investigation from @mckenziefunk.com & me
Here's the story: www.propublica.org/article/vide...
Last year when I wrote about prison staff jumping ship for ICE, I reported that BOP had lost a net of at least 1400 employees by late fall.
I just got new data showing they lost a net of ~1700 by mid-December -- though w/EOY retirements the final 2025 figures will likely be higher.

After the US admin cancelled the $B Climate + Weather Disaster dataset, @climatecentral.org hired the scientists who ran it and set it back up.
Now the 2025 numbers are in: it's 3rd highest year on record and highest year w/o land-falling hurricanes.

Can't help thinking about the many citizens detained by immigration agents & held at gunpoint or had guns/less lethals pointed at them
Some (thinking of George Retes) reported attempts to move out of the way per agents' requests, but were violently detained anyway

NEW: For more than a century, a smelter spewed lead dust over Omaha.
For decades, the government cleaned it up.
But a shift in guidance from the Trump administration may stop thousands more from potential cleanup, exposing families to the harmful metal.
