Old Mta Metro Card backs from 2006 with an illustration Granville T. Woods. Information about the card's expiry date and celebration years (1904-2004). It also reads: "Granville T. Woods - This self-educated African-American inventor made subway travel possible in New York City when he patented the third-rail system for conducting electric power to railway cars." A second card is depicted with the text in Spanish.
I'm at one of my fave spots - the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn, and just before we close out Black History Month, I'd like to remind everyone that the third-rail system for powering the NYC Subways was invented by a Black man - Granville T. Woods.
