FACT OF THE DAY. 11 March 1988. Bank of England 1 pound note, introduced in 1797, ceased to be legal tender in England and Wales at midnight. It was the smallest denomination note and had continued to be printed until 1984. It was replaced by the 1 pound coin.

11 March 1918 Captain Albert Evelyn Alderson 3 Bn The Queen's (Royal West Surrey Regiment) died when he accidently drowned. He was buried in the Struma Military Cemetery, Greece.

11 March 1918 Captain Hardic Grey Ashton of 25 Sqdn Royal Flying Corps died from wounds and was buried in the Lapugnoy Military Cemetery, France. Hardic was 23.
