As someone with disabilities who just had skin cancer surgery earlier in the week, picketing during the first three days of this strike has been beyond exhausting... and I wouldn't have missed it for a second! I love my @PCCFFAP and PCCFCE union siblings so much. Solidarity is everything!

Portland Community College faculty and staff going on strike Wednesday morning Unionized faculty and classified staff are all set to strike Wednesday after negotiations with PCC administrators failed to yield agreements.

PCC Admin fought hard against open bargaining. They wanted all mediation to be confidential. They didn't want to be interviewed on camera for this piece.

Corporate-style comms and glossy PR is not leadership.

I've worked at PCC for 17 years, served in union leadership for 10 of those, and this is my fourth time serving on my union (@pccffap.bsky.social) 's bargaining team. I love PCC and I love my colleagues, and I want to share a little bit about why we are preparing to go on strike next week.

Impending Strikes at PCC Might Be the Testing Ground for a Controversial Piece of Legislation If the strikes drag on, PCC could be a case study for whether unemployment benefits strengthen the determination of employees to hold out for a better deal.

Thanks @wweek.com and @joannah11.bsky.social for covering my union's potentially history-making strike. We do not wish to be a test case for SB 916, but it's nice to know that our members will have access to unemployment benefits if this drags on a few weeks

In a historic action, both federations at PCC have voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike!
This does not mean a strike begins now, but that our unions are organized and ready to fight for a fair contract.

ICYMI there were some fireworks at the PCC Board Meeting last night. The testimony from students and workers was so powerful. We presented a strike pledge signed by 783 of our members. A faculty member announced a recall petition for Board Chair Tiffani Penson.

Today we are launching our 1st ever strike authorization vote πŸ”₯✊

This morning the PCC President announced 2 layoffs of exec/management level staff in her office. Each will receive 6 months severance.

Makes you wonder if they moved up the timeline to influence strike vote. Are they panicking? πŸ€”

Administrative bloat alienates college leaders from students and faculty. They can live in a fantasy world where they are successful and good at their jobs, detatched from the consequences of their actions. Our students deserve so much better. /fin

PCC Admin might present this β€œSelf-Study” process as a win, but it has led to a severe blow to our college’s reputation, a rift between administration and educators, an Unfair Labor Practice charge against PCC , and very real negative impacts to our students. 8/

Faculty provided industry-specific data on student and graduate success, as well as pointing out several mistakes with the administration’s β€œdata.” The process led to the closure of popular and successful programs at PCC. 7/

The process has been far from β€œradically transparent.” It placed an undue burden on faculty and program staff to justify their right to exist. It was pushed onto faculty with little time and no support. Many faculty members worked beyond their contracted hours to oblige this process. 6/

They presented this process as β€œradically transparent” and β€œdata-driven" - a truly shocking claim. If they presented this to their own employees, they would have been laughed and booed off the stage.

We sent an open letter sent to the OCCA leadership. Excerpts below 4/

🧡 about ADMINISTRATIVE BLOAT πŸ‘Ž

The number of managers at PCC has increased by 29% since 2019. During this time, morale has tanked. Our 2024 member survey showed that 9% of FFAP members trust administrators to make decisions that are in the best interest of students. 1/

Portland Community College cuts programs to fight budget deficit The program reductions stem from increasing costs, insufficient state funding and declining enrollment.

Since 2019, enrollment has declined by 19% but management FTE has increased 29%

Last year, 43% of new hires at PCC were managers, administrators, or confidential employees.

Cutting programs = fewer students/less revenue.

This headline should be "PCC has a spending problem"

PCC seems to be following the DOGE playbook of manufacturing a crisis and then making decisions without regard to contracts. "Move fast break things" isn't going to fly for our union. We intend to enforce the contract.
