Phil Craigβs 1945: The Reckoning was my companion on our recent trip to Melbourne & the Great Ocean Road. An excellent Summer read to accompany the many small & independent local beers we sampled. Whatβs not to like?ποΈ π π»

A tragic development. The end of mass market paperbacks.

85 years ago, the 6th Australian Division captured the Italian-controlled port city of Tobruk, Libya, which later became a garrison for Australian and British forces. In this striking image taken on 22 January 1941, members of the 2/11th Infantry Battalion, having penetrated Tobrukβs outer defences, assemble on the escarpment on the south side of the harbour. -- πΈ Photographer: James Francis (Frank) Hurley Accession number: AWM 005392

On 1 Dec 1941 the NZ Division ceased to participate in the battle for Libya as an organised force. Some elements of it would continue to fight, most notably 5 NZ Bde which fought on the Gazala line before being withdrawn. The remaining 3,500 men and 700 vehicles on Zaafran outside Tobruk withdrew.
Great π find on the weekend. π¦πΊ war correspondent Wilfred Burchett traveled extensively in China, Burma & India reporting on the war. He was later the 1st Western journalist to visit Hiroshima. Post-#WWII, he became controversial figure.

Just finished reading @almurrayβs π. Learnt lots about airborne ops & for the first time the battle of Arnhem made sense to me. Great shout out too to WO Keith Prowd @AusAirForce, a glider pilot with No. 196 Sqn who also flew on #DDay. Prowd was awarded a π³π± Airmanβs Cross.
Terribly sad news. An incredible historian, Tim was always generous & encouraging.
On 25 October 1941 the Axis bagged one of the biggest successes in its interdiction campaign against the Tobruk Run, when Abdiel-Class mine-laying cruiser HMS Latona was sunk by dive bombers on the way to Tobruk.
