I’m looking at the methods and still not sure they differentiate well between empathy and labor…

Is it empathy that’s hard… or persistent unpaid labor…?

These are so good! Thank you for sharing! Here are a few of mine: 1) knowing what I value + making choices that align 2) less stuff=less to organize 3) only owning clothes that I actually ENJOY putting on 4) using AI to give me a few takes on an idea or paragraph for inspo when I have writers block.

I am now exploring constructs in my research that may be less sensitive to risk, or that may be more equitable as target outcomes in the first place. Childhood is magic…not just a dark period of vulnerability.

We KNOW development is non-linear. The framing of perceived linear risk (yes I’m pushing back on ACE’s) and its impact on linear development (higher vs lower emotional suppression) is inherently flawed.

…scientific knowledge is largely centered on reduction (of potential risk and problems) and less on elevation (of truly optimal processes and pathways for children’s development). It also creates a lens that children with certain risk factors can’t simultaneously elevate strengths and flourish.

However, I began to see that describing development only in terms of risk factors often has the opposite effect of what I was intending to do with my work. It can mean that our work segregates the very understanding of emotional health and optimal development into a sphere of risk such that…

Earlier in my career I was only/most interested in early development in the context of risk. It was how I brought my passion for social justice into my academic career. Before that, I had planned to be a civil rights lawyer. 🧵

Does the child’s viewpoint that others can only see what they see reflect a developmental egocentrism truly, or does all learning at all ages go like this, but as adults we are only noticing specific kinds of learning that we have already gained differential perspectives on through experience?

It’s interesting because Piaget seemed to say in later writings that he didn’t view this as kid-specific as much as a process that describes learning… we all assume what we know is the truth until that truth gets stretched. So I wonder if we’ve over interpreted this…

My favorite thing about kids is how flexible they can be thinking outside the box! Toddlers and preschoolers especially! It’s a superpower we lose as we get older.
