โฆas a matter of practice within our research teams. What barriers may exist at the multiples of study design, recruitment, etc that limit representation? Is it a value to improve this, or is the perceived problem more to do with being clear about research findings and how to interpret?

I think the ethical and just approach is for us to be accountable for the multiple ways people arenโt represented in our work. For example, a statement in the method section that describes the issue and approach taken (as you described here) and a reflection, either in the discussion orโฆ

Anyone have a terrific department handbook for doc study/dissertations? โTerrificโ = student-centered, intended to lift up, guide students in the art (& meaning) of research & writing, not just a written record of department policies and deadlines. We are writing one and Iโd love to connect!

Iโm looking at the methods and still not sure they differentiate well between empathy and laborโฆ

These are so good! Thank you for sharing! Here are a few of mine: 1) knowing what I value + making choices that align 2) less stuff=less to organize 3) only owning clothes that I actually ENJOY putting on 4) using AI to give me a few takes on an idea or paragraph for inspo when I have writers block.

I am now exploring constructs in my research that may be less sensitive to risk, or that may be more equitable as target outcomes in the first place. Childhood is magicโฆnot just a dark period of vulnerability.

We KNOW development is non-linear. The framing of perceived linear risk (yes Iโm pushing back on ACEโs) and its impact on linear development (higher vs lower emotional suppression) is inherently flawed.

โฆscientific knowledge is largely centered on reduction (of potential risk and problems) and less on elevation (of truly optimal processes and pathways for childrenโs development). It also creates a lens that children with certain risk factors canโt simultaneously elevate strengths and flourish.

However, I began to see that describing development only in terms of risk factors often has the opposite effect of what I was intending to do with my work. It can mean that our work segregates the very understanding of emotional health and optimal development into a sphere of risk such thatโฆ

Earlier in my career I was only/most interested in early development in the context of risk. It was how I brought my passion for social justice into my academic career. Before that, I had planned to be a civil rights lawyer. ๐งต

Fascinating stuff, thanks for taking the time to break it down here. I see so many people clinically who are trying understand the cyclical nature of their mental health-related symptoms and we are lacking the tools to support, empower, and treat!

Does the childโs viewpoint that others can only see what they see reflect a developmental egocentrism truly, or does all learning at all ages go like this, but as adults we are only noticing specific kinds of learning that we have already gained differential perspectives on through experience?

Itโs interesting because Piaget seemed to say in later writings that he didnโt view this as kid-specific as much as a process that describes learningโฆ we all assume what we know is the truth until that truth gets stretched. So I wonder if weโve over interpreted thisโฆ

My favorite thing about kids is how flexible they can be thinking outside the box! Toddlers and preschoolers especially! Itโs a superpower we lose as we get older.
