We typically select two students per year. Our funding comes entirely from private donors, so consider donating if youβre able! The majority of our funding has come from screenings showing the documentary about my life, contact me if youβd like to host a screening: www.spacehopecharityfilm.com
Funding ($10k over 4 years) can be used for conference travel or laptops or anything the student needs, even food or flat tires if thatβs their situation. For more information, see www.woodysstars.org
Flyer for Woodyβs Stars. Applications open now and due November 3rd. $2500 yearly funding and mentorship program for University of Oregon physics students. Funds are allocated to opportunities that accelerate academic and professional learning. Underrepresented groups in the field of physics and those pursuing astronomy are strongly encouraged to apply. For more information, see www.woodysstars.org
Please share this with folks pursuing physics at the University of Oregon! I started an enrichment fund and mentorship program in honor of my late son. Folks that are historically excluded from STEM are strongly encouraged to apply.

Bill Nye and over 300 other space advocates asked Congress to fund NASA (and NSF). As one of the people who spoke to members of Congress, both Republicans and Democrats, Iβm feeling hopeful. Everyone I met with was in strong support of funding NASA.

Screenshot of an email from NASA addressed to Charity Woodrum. It starts by saying βThank you for applying for the Astronaut Candidate Program. I regret to inform you that you have northern selected. As you may know, over 8,000 applicationsβ¦β
Iβm framing this! Itβs a rejection letter. I applied to the astronaut program and was not selected. Iβve never been so proud of a rejection. I didnβt get it, but I was qualified to apply, and Iβm proud of that.
Yay! Congrats prof!
The petition link is in the article - if youβre in the local DMV community you can sign for support!
My amateur astronomer friends are my favorite. And yes, yβall canβt shut up haha! I canβt either, so maybe I can blame yβall for that? Some of my favorite public talks have been for amateur astronomy groups.
As an undergrad, I learned a lot from amateur astronomers, love amateur astronomy!
Yeah, we overlapped for a year there then! Iβm sure Iβll be back in Tucson eventually and we should all go have tacos together!
Ahh! I wish we had met while I was at the University of Arizona! Thank you for listening β¨
Listened to @radiolab.bsky.social's episode on @charitywoodrum.bsky.social's path to astrophysics, and it reminded me a lot of my wife's trajectory--started out as a veterinarian, got completely emotionally burnt out, went back to school, and is now pursuing a PhD in physics on neutrino physics

For the last couple weeks, Iβve been thinking I had something due on August 13th but couldnβt figure it out. I realized itβs the one year anniversary of defending my PhD! Here are some photos with my amazing PhD advisor, Professor Marcia Rieke. She got me a cake and some champagne to celebrate.
Holy crap this was a good @radiolab.bsky.social
Kudos to @lutimestwo.bsky.social and @charitywoodrum.bsky.social
Honestly just loved this storytelling

If you listen to just one podcast episode this week, make it this one. Not only is Dr Woodrumβs story an incredible encouragement to persevere through adversity, but is also a poignant reminder that, even in the darkest places, there is light to be found, literally and metaphorically.
Carl Sagan: Weβre all stardust
Evil Carl Sagan: Weβll all be stardust
This is a must-listen podcast episode. Dr. Woodrumβs personal story is devastating and inspiring, yes, but her science is at least as compelling. Iβm left in total awe and yearning to learn more about quiescent galaxies and late star formation.
Dr. Woodrumβs story is inspirational. It reminded me why space is worth exploring: love.
Give this a listen for sure. So grateful to work with Charity at NASA Goddard - she is an incredible scientist and amazing human! β€οΈ
Thank you, Sanjana β€οΈ
There are some people who are a light in this world. When sad things happen around us or to us, and cynicism starts to creep in, we can look to them and still see the best of humanity. Charity is one of those people. Please give this beautiful radiolab episode a listen β€οΈ
This episode was so moving in the most beautiful ways but do have many tissues on hand. Thank you so much Dr. Woodrum for sharing your story.
I was actually on a long walk yesterday to work off some of the nervousness about the podcast going live. I stopped to give my dog a break and read some messages I received about the episode, similar to this one, and I started publicly crying too. Thank you for listening and for the solidarity π
