Pink water lillies bloom in the foreground of a lake with a white Thai sala structure in the distance on the water.
A cup of iced mocha with straw from Modrip Coffee 101 sits on a black wooden slat table in front of a textured pebble cement wall.
A Thai sala built in traditional architectural style sits refleced in the water on the surface of a lake.
Green water lettuce growing under the surface of the edge of a lake looking across to the far side in the distance.
Then to our nearby lake for some coffee. βοΈ
Khao Tao Reservoir was Thailand's first royal-initiated irrigation project, completed during the reign of Rama IX in 1963. It's purpose was to provide fresh drinking water to the local fishing village and prevent seawater from flooding agricultural land.
A fishing boat passes in front of a sunrise scene on a rather smooth ocean with hazy clouds on horizon.
A Thai man stands on a rocky outcrop over a short beach.
Large boulders off a rocky outcrop with a long curving beach stretching to the horizon in hazy morning air.
A fishing boat passes into the reflection of the sun rusing over a hazy ocean.
Biked down to our local beach here in Khao Tao, called Hat Sai Noi, which means "Little Sand Beach" for the sunrise this morning. π

Some bullet points that I post from time to time. My answer to a reader who asked me: what could our journalists do NOW to break with some of their more corrosive habits.
LOL. That's the absolute truth. I always laugh at the mangoes in US supermarkets. We have over 200 varieties of them here in Thailand alone!
While acknowledging that reefs canβt realistically be rebuilt from frozen larvae alone at todayβs scale of loss, she says the effort is more than symbolic. It is, she says, βthe genetic heart of the restoration effort,β preserving diversity and adaptability that future reefs will need. π¦

This is just devastating. Are there any similar organizations doing comprehensive reef monitoring work here in Thailand?

Major soy traders including Cargill, ADM and Bunge are exiting the Amazon Soy Moratorium β a move that could raise deforestation by 30% by 2045.
Observers warn it sends a βgreen lightβ to land speculators, even as forest loss threatens rainfall, yields and long-term market stability.
Dear @washingtonpost.com
journalists. Solidarity on a terrible day. But also: itβs an opportunity. The @theguardian.com also fucked over its journalists last year.

Silly question from someone who lives across the world in Thailand and can't attend in person: are these type of things ever filmed and posted to any of the museum's social media or elsewhere? Would absolutely love to see! π
Sunbeams shine out from behind a forested hillside in the distance at sunrise with a large pineapple field stretching out ahead. Blue sky with a few whispy clouds above.
Green pineapple fields at sunset with a silhouette of mountains on the horizon as a yellow sun half sets behind them in an orange red sky.
Spent a lifetime looking for a place to watch the sunrise and sunset. Well, it seems after 50 years on this earth I've finally found one. We closed on our land today. It's all ours. Let the dream begin.

In the mid 90s as an NYU student I had a seminar class where Kenneth Roth was a speaker, in his capacity of Executive Director of Human Rights Watch. He descibed his technique to publically call out & shame rogue regimes around the world who were commiting abuses. In 2026 the US is now the pariah.
I'm so sorry and hoping most/all things make it. π
Important study of Thailand's coral diversity. As a diver, I have seen with my own eyes the degradation of some coral sites over the 16 or so years since I got certified.
