In honour of What Happens at Night filming underway, watching Scorsese's thriller entry in Spielberg's Amazing Stories, Mirror, Mirror (s1e19; March 9/86).
If you watch The Scorsese Machine doc - youtube here: youtu.be/hgSPn4-GiL4?... - some of the influences for the direction are named.

Best Picture nominees ranked imo. These wouldn't have been the nominees I would have picked (I would have found room for both Linklaters, Mastermind, and Wake Up Dead Man, at least).
Still, a good lineup. I think OscarsSoWhite changes are beginning to pay real dividends for the Academy.

As YouTube prepares to be the Oscars' broadcast home starting in a couple of years, I can't think of a better way to prepare than compiling and promoting a curated collection of high quality copies of all public domain Oscar winners.

I recognize the Vertigo score anywhere!
Also, this is the very rare-considering-the-period smoking in this picture.

Could 20s movies actually write over the picture like this?
I can't recall ever seeing it.
For reference, "The End" cards from Sherlock Jr and The Gold Rush.

I haven't seen Jean Dujardin in much, but he's excellently sleezy, ridiculous, and hilarious in The Wolf of Wall Street.

Joining the #TCMParty for The Artist (2011). I haven't seen this entirely. I tried once, but got bored and bounced. I'll give it another go.
According to my Letterboxd, I've seen 57 of 97 Best Pictures, but I may have missed some when marking movies as watched.

F1.
After this, I'll have watched all the Best Picture noms. 2025 was a good year for movies.
I still give best year of the decade to 2023. Oscars ultimately got that one wrong though: Flower Moon should have won Best Picture and Oppenheimer isn't even the best movie in Barbenheimer.

This introduction of a key to the executive washroom is one of a hundred Wilder structural masterstrokes of The Apartment. Everything you ever need to know about screenwriting is in this movie.
The repetition and lyricism of the picture means that the film is as much music as anything.

Now joining the #TCMParty for some Wilder.
1960 was such a wild year for film: The Apartment, Psycho, Breathless, La Dolce Vita, Trou, Rocco and His Brothers, and much more.
I saw The Apartment 4k restoration on the big screen a couple of years ago, the outdoor scenes are incredible.

I don't know if people realize that Young Frankenstein and Blazing Saddles both came out in 1974. That's so wild.

Up next.
I kinda resent this movie for being France's Oscar submission and thereby blocking what may have been a way for Linklater to get his overdue Oscar, but I'll try not to let that colour my impression of the film.
Speaking of Nouvelle Vague, how is it not on Netflix Canada yet?!

The Railroadder is a Canadian late-stage Buster Keaton, which you might know from the discussion in the Peter Bogdanovich documentary.
In any event, it's on the National Film Board of Canada app (which you should absolutely have if you're in Canada).

The Secret Agent. Don't really know much about this other than the acclaim.
After this, I'll have seen all the Best Picture nominees other than F1. Thus far, it's One Battle and Sinners in that group for me, as it is for many others. I give the edge to One Battle.

Jim Jarmusch's Father Mother Sister Brother. Been looking forward to this.
I have Mubi on a deal rate for a couple of months. The service has a great catalogue, it's just too pricey, but they have short-term deals pretty regularly. Secret Agent is also on here, and I'll watch that next.

Decades from now, the most important question about early 21st century America will be how it could have (re)elected Trump.
There will not be a more fulsome and concise answer than "not only did Wolf of Wall Street not win all the awards, many criticized it as too generous to Belfort."

Very surprised by West Side Story. For one, no adaptation has more thoroughly argued that Romeo and Juliet are the two least interesting characters in Romeo and Juliet.

Always interesting when a movie amasses credibility and then unabashedly spends it.
West Side Story starts with breathtaking and expert overhead shots of Manhattan. So you think this film looks precisely the way it wants to as it pummels with some very weird and cheap looking stuff.
