Griffith Park baseball stadium from the air.
This week we're going to Washington's Griffith Stadium on May 14, 1941. The Detroit Tigers are visiting the capital as the war is impacting rosters across the league, but the national game must go on. Tune your AM radio to our podcast or YouTube channel to listen to our recreated radio broadcast.
12 men will concentrate on the WBC. That's sad.
You know what would be nice for the World Baseball Classic (and all baseball) is more female voices. More accessible, more welcoming, more points of view, catalysts for change. Bring it on!

The Go Go White Sox, From The 1950s
This week's game takes us back to July 1, 1955. The Chicago White Sox are almost ready to earn the name "Go-Go White Sox." Meanwhile, the Cleveland Indians have to prove the 1954 Pennant wasn't a one-off. Tune your AM radio to our podcast or YouTube channel to listen to our recreated radio broadcast
We're not able to bring you a full recreation this week (we'll head into the archive with some new clips!. As Pete Rose works the count, neither the visiting LA Dodgers nor the welcoming Cincinnati Reds have scored. All the lights are on (3 balls, 2 strikes, 2 outs), and Rose is hungry to get on base and into scoring position at Crosley Field. Listen to this play (and more) in our AM Radio Recreation!
Thanks for the share, Alex. I know one of the British umpires who travelled to the course,; they already know it's going to improve their umpiring. We don't have a glut of umpires over here, a few one-day MLB courses for the benefit of the US pro leagues isn't going to help grass roots anywhere.
The last class of the Harry Wendelstedt Umpire School. MLB might be taking over umpire finding for Majors and Minors, but there are more games and umpires needed worldwide... and they've just lost one of the best practical courses. www.nytimes.com/athletic/704...

A promotional card for a baseball radio broadcast. It features LA Dodgers pitcher Don Sutton. It says "Don Sutton is in the early stages of his career that will see him become the Dodgers all time leader in wins, starts, and shutouts. But in 1969 he was one of many pitchers figuring out the new mound height and strike zone."
Following the dominance of pitchers in the 1968 season, MLB has taken steps to even things out, and hurlers across the two leagues are dealing with smaller strike zones and lower mound heights. Don Sutton is one of them, as he faces Jim Maloney of the Cincinnati Reds in April 1969.

"Super Caley go ballistic, Celtic are atrocious" a memorable headline to a report by newspaper editor Paul Hickson
I'll offer this absolute classic from Scottish Football as the minnows take out one of the leading teams.
It's going to be ...interesting... what happens around the players attending the World Baseball Classic.

A baseball game is taking place at the Cincinnati Reds' Crosley Field in 1969.
Another week, another game to explore. Crosley Field welcomes the Los Angeles Dodgers to the home of the Cincinnati Reds. The year of the pitcher is over, tonight's pitchers (Don Sutton and Jim Maloney) are settling in with the new rules, and the first hints of the Big Red Machine are on show.
We're not Vin, but if you need some AM-Radio games before everyone reports, we've been recreating baseball games on the radio for our podcasts... we've just posted a 1969 Dodgers at Reds battle. podnews.net/podcast/iaq9...
Classic Baseball Radio's play-by-play caller, Ewan Spence. He's on a baseball field, with a baseball cap and a radio headset.
Just add a stopwatch and a sports headset, then start your recording. Anyone want to try doing color while @ewanspence.co.uk does the play-by-play?

Then we have the scorecards. These are used "as live" during the recordings. We have the line-up in advance and can note their slash lines on the day, along with notes on player temperaments and important facts. As we go through the broadcast, we fill in the scorecard to keep us on top of the game.
A page of commentators' notes for a baseball game, with game stats, league standings, scores, pitcher reports, and trivia for the broadcast.
Next we have the Commentators' Notes. Prepared beforehand, this has the league standings at the time of the game, scores from around the leagues, pitcher reports, field notes, trivia, previous series, and whatever we find that might be useful. Also have some tick charts for progress and editing.
A spreadsheet of play-by-play calls of a baseball game.
First up, we have a copy of the play-by-play (big thanks to @baseball-reference.com and #retrosheets as always). Not everything is recorded in these older games, so we use our own procedural generation engine to fill in the gaps.
We'll have a new AM-styled game broadcast tomorrow. For now, would you like to have a look at some paperwork from the Orioles at Yankees game on August 15, 1960? Spoilers from this point on! If you want to listen along...

Hoyt Wilhelm is coming on in relief for the Baltimore Orioles as they take on the New York Yankees. Given the vicious nature of Wilhelm's knuckleball, catcher Clint Courtney needs a secret weapon... a 45-inch catcher's mitt. Head back in time to August 15 1960 with your AM radio (err, podcast).
