For a round trip 370 between Paris and Montreal (12,000km) without fossil fuel, approximately 360 liters of fossil kerosene per passenger would need to be replaced by one of the following alternatives:
- 370 liters of used cooking oil: about two month's collection from a fast food restaurant
- 1,000m2 of lignocellulosic crops: equivalent to 4 tennis counrts of annual harvest
- 1,800 kg of firewood or wood waste: enough wood to heat a well-insulated home for a winter
- 8,000 kWh of electricity: twice the annual electricity user of a typical French household
Debunking myths that there are *any* routes to limiting aviation climate pollution, which don't involve *substantial decreases* in the volume of planes in the air

Did you know that one passenger on one return flight Dublin-Paris causes as much climate pollution as a parent who lives 7.5km from a school driving a car to and from a school twice every school day for the whole year (167 days) ?
But if that passenger did that trip to and from Paris using ferry and train, that would be equivalent to only 12 days of the same school runs ? *
Your school can have a big impact by opting to stay in Ireland for school tours instead of flight-based school trips. There are plenty of excellent and fun school trips which can be done on the island of Ireland. Or if you do have a school trip abroad, for cultural exchange for example, your school can look into travel by land and sea! Travelling in this way is a great experience for students, who see the places they are travelling through, and have fun on the journey!
The website http://ByLandAndSea.ie has lots of useful information about travelling by land and sea to and from Ireland. Will your school join the Slow Travel movement ?

'The new tobacco': The cities banning fossil fuel adverts
Cities across the world are clearing their billboards of flight ads, SUVs, cruise ships and petrol cars in an attempt to cut emissions.
Last year, we urged the Irish government to introduce a nationwide ban on fossil fuel advertising.
They chose not to act.
But across the globe, cities and countries are stepping up—reclaiming the narrative and taking bold action.
Ireland, meanwhile, remains a climate laggard.

Head 12 Exemption from the Act of 2015
Provide that:
Any function or exercise undertaken under this Act shall be exempt from the provisions of section 15 of the Act of 2015.
Explanatory Note
This Head provides that the provisions of section 15 of the Climate Action and Low Carbon Development Act 2015 do not apply to any functions or exercises undertaken under this Bill.
An appalling proposal is hidden at the end of the Government’s Bill on the airport cap; it would exclude decisions under the legislation from the current obligation on almost all public bodies to consider their climate impact and to be consistent with climate objectives.

4 stories in the @irishtimes.com highlight the crazy approach to climate action by the government. 3 articles detailing the heavy financial & social cost of climate breakdown, and 1 where the govt celebrates increasing climate emissions for the airport by lifting the passenger cap. 🤯 #SpeirGorm

HE IRISH TIMES
Sir, - What connects floods, flying and
the Minister for Climate, Energy,
Environment and Transport, Darragh
O'Brien?
Flooding is increasing due to climate
change. Flying is the single most
detrimental activity in terms of climate
effects. O'Brien wants to increase flying
by removing the passenger cap at
Dublin Airport.
Is this what's called joined-up thinking?
- Yours, etc,
CELESTINE O'REILLY

airplane emitting large amounts of polluting smoke
So-called Minister of "Climate" has just made a choice. That it's more important to increase flights, than to protect ourselves against flooding, homes uninsurable, people worldwide loosing their livelihoods, a tightrope with tipping points to world wide chaos. www.goloudplayer.com/podcasts/new...

Musk row a negotiation that became a 'PR gift' - O'Leary
Ryanair's spat with Elon Musk was a "public negotiation that turned into a huge PR gift", according to group CEO Michael O'Leary.
It is grossly negligent for a national broadcaster to report on Ryanair’s profit margins without once mentioning emissions, given it is one of Europe’s biggest CO₂ emitters.
This is not journalism. It is head in the sand reporting with a generous helping of free corporate PR.

Graph showing impact of different actions, flying less is second from the top. Source World Resources Institute
'Flying less is the second most effective action individuals can take to reduce emissions and climate impact'.
So why on earth is the Irish Government actively encouraging even more polluting flights via a proposed lifting of the Dublin Airport cap and re-introducing internal flights to Derry?

Flying in the face of climate change
Sir, – Regarding Conor Pope’s article “How to maximise your annual leave in 2026 and hit the hotspots at the right time.” January 6th: This article is utterly irresponsible in encouraging readers to fly to four or five destinations throughout the year – given the climate apocalypse we’re facing if we don’t slash greenhouse gas emissions urgently and the fact that flying is the most polluting thing that the average individual does in terms of causing these emissions.
There is only one reference in the article – and a very casual one at that – to the climate impact of aviation, where the author suggests that the reader consider a staycation in June “cutting down on your carbon footprint and saving yourself a few bob on flights and accommodation too”.
If the author is going to include the cost of flights, he should include the cost in terms of greenhouse gas pollution too.
For instance, that return Dublin/Rome flight may cost ¤179 per person. But in terms of carbon emissions, the cost is about half a tonne.
Including the carbon pollution information would help readers understand the cost of flights to their future and particularly the future of their children, generations to come and indeed, and to people in Ireland and around the world who are at the frontlines of the crisis (like the people of Midleton, Co Cork). – Yours, etc,
ANGELA DEEGAN,
Dublin 7.
