Wow. Fuck. McSweeney's has always been a favourite of mine for oddball fiction and smart humour. This is a punch of distilled fact, and it's the least funny thing we have all ever read.

I didn’t hear a touque referred as a “beanie” until I was like 16 and started talking to more Americans, at which point I was pretty confused by all the people saying they wore their “beanies” every day because I had only ever heard that word used for hats with propellers on them to that point

Also like...legions of health-conscious perimenopausal cis women are starting our day with creatine and high protein. If it affected my gender I think I would have noticed by now. Or maybe not *flexes while glowering at the mirror*

Just dropped some food at a Little Free Pantry. We support a food shelf monetarily, too, but some of our most vulnerable neighbors have good reason not to want to go to large gathering points this week to get needed supplies. Let's stock the shelves through this. Have each other's backs, Minnesota.

This new year holds so much peril and so much possibility. I don't know what to do about the big things but I do know the small things always matter. Feed someone hungry, comfort someone sick, be with someone lonely. Rescue an animal. Support an artist. Pick up litter in your park.

I am so proud of my family and friends in MN and wish I could be there with you. Instead I am at home in Canada making chili for the unhoused. My parents made this choice for me before I was born and I have never been so aware of the privilege.
