By understanding how salt affects the immune system at a genetic level, this article explores how these processes contribute to high blood pressure caused by salt.
Recent studies suggest that these immune cells can "remember" salt exposure through changes in their genetic activity, allowing them to respond more strongly over time. These genetic changes, called epigenetic mechanisms, also influence how other immune cells, like T-cells, behave.
Layman summary of the article:
Too much salt in our diet increases the risk of heart disease, especially for people whose blood pressure is sensitive to salt. Our research shows that specific immune cells in the body react quickly to excess salt, causing blood pressure to rise.
