Screenshot from article linked in OP reads: βAccording to building inspection records obtained by the Review through the Freedom of Information Act, an inspection this January revealed that the building's fire alarm system and many smoke detectors are disabled because of water damage, that exterior exits are blocked with materials, there's defective or exposed electrical wiring, plus holes in ceilings, floors and walls. According to the inspector, the building is not approved for occupancy and βhas many violations that have not been corrected in years. Structural engineers are required to evaluate structure for safety.β"
Yikes on trikes!
I am SO SORRY for all that, but Pinky McTongue-Horne has me wheezing
Thanks! He is now even scarier!
Colfax!
I'm back on my 1920s building entrance bullshit, this time with an early contender for Best of 2026

West Lafayette is the only one I've been to, but no one will lend me a helicopter to see the rest. Would also accept the offer of a small plane.
Screenshot of 2 Bluesky posts. @TudorAF: "The look @ladytophamcatt.bsky.social gave when I talked about liking Insull revival buildings and she thought I said something else revival" @ladytophamcatt: Y'all gotta understand... We're in a car on some godforsaken road in Indiana when he starts rhapsodizing with more enthusiasm than enunciation about his deep & abiding love of In*cough&, & yeaaah... glad we got that whole -sull/-cel thing cleared up before I hit the eject passenger button"
Days? @tudoraf.bsky.social & I barely made it an hour outside of Chicago before things started to deteriorate
i want to visit the jewel boxes, but I don't want to drive & none of my mutuals seem to have a helicopter I can borrow
Hey, sometimes ya just gotta scream into the void & scratch
But I mean... LOOK AT THAT FONT!!! Seriously, look at it! π
That's one of my faves! The building itself is exquisite, but that entrance is almost beyond belief.
lol, Soren scheduled one, but we all agreed to it weeks ago, so Iβm just being an ass
In any case, very happy you have released your pod on the gentlemen. I will now go walk into the sea while carefully saying f-u-j-i-t-a out loud.
It autocorrected me. I will be deleting, lol!
Once you see the Hotel Guyon in person, there's just something about it that will not let you go. It is hauntingly beautiful, even in its current state.
These pics are from 2023, before they put up the scaffolding.

One of the most heartbreaking photos from the Eastland Disaster in Chicago - that of a fireman holding the lifeless body of a child - was captured by Jun Fujita.
Learn more about Fujita's life and work in the latest episode of the podcast.

"People lie, but moss does not." King shit!
I have a grandmother buried at Burr Oak & cannot describe to you how we felt when this story first broke & no one really knew who was impacted. I love a righteous nerd saving the day.
Color photo of a two-story apartment building in variegated tan brick. Entrances to units are motel-style, from open hallways. In front of hallways, at each end (covering staircase on left) are large sections of breeze block.
Close-up of gray breeze block on building in first pic. Alternating pattern of (1) open rounded rectangles and (2) reflected Ys making triangles at top and bottom and trapezoids at side, all installed vertically.
Ignored the Queen Annes and Italianates of Woodstock, IL, for this breeze block on Jackson St., ca. 1964
I hope you grabbed one of each pamphlet for me

Isn't it an amazing experience? Easily one of the coolest, most fulfilling things I do every year.
