For tons of folks, there was that -one- game that blew the doors open and showed what #TTRPGs could be. The one that started the #IndieGame rabbit hole.

What was YOUR "gateway" indie #TTRPG? The first one that made you realize a whole other world was out there?

Primetime Adventures was a real eye opener for me. My group was deep in VtM hobby, but someone from the wider community fell in love with PTA, ran a bunch of one shots, and even sold books!

For #SuperMarioBros40th I booted up my NES-mini at my parents place and played it and other classics for 2 hours. But the experience was only complete when I heard my parents say "turn that off and come have dinner". Biggest shot of nostalgia ever!

Stop equating money with power. Sure, sometimes power comes from money, but traditionally power made money, not the other way around. Start thinking about the all the sources of power and maybe that will help.

And having your own website means your content will never be drowned out on the content mill. You link post to your website on social media because you have to, but it'll all lead back to you, not something else.

TTRPGs are in my opinion a literary hobby. For most people, reading comprehension is something they don't do. They did it in school, but adult life doesn't require reading anymore, and its dorky for them.
But CRPGs are entertainment, all bullet points and no depths. And fancy graphics, of course.

Me playing an Intarsia game, halfway through.

Me playing an Intarsia game, halfway through.

Yesterday I ran another session of TSL rpg for my friend group. I love how creative, happy and involved everyone gets about sci-fi magical girl cheeky action. We finished the evening with a game of Intarsia boardgame, and the host snapped this pic of me pondering my next move. Good times!

It's the most creativity I've seen at the table in years! When people are on the same page, magic really happens!
I expect to run Call of Cthulhu and DnD24, but take one at a time. Hopefully it's going to be a good year with friends and games!

That's my wish for everyone reading this far!

...than I've played in previous years. I want to correct that and get through my backlog in the next few months, so juggling both hobbies is going to be my challenge for 2025.

I've restarted a Thirsty Sword Lesbians campaign in a sci-fi magical girl world, and it's a blast!

...gave me a sense of purpose I needed in my life. Starting the week with friends makes it easier to face the grind, instead of having fun as a "reward for the workweek". Took me years to figure this out, and it's what working for me now.
But my RPG hobby took a serious hit, I played a lot less

In 2024 I took up the challenge of managing events for my boardgame group. It has been very rewarding, and a lot easier than I thought it would be. Having a scheduled meetup with friends has given me a lot of confort and satisfaction, and making everyone feel welcomed at events...

Categorising through mechanics is pretty big too. Not just euro or ameritrash tags, but also draft, worker placement, legacy, narrative, etc.
There's a lot that boardgames are doing well that ttrrpgs need to learn and implement as well.

This is the finish line of one of my favourite mountain trails, and it has a fitting name: "the Devil's Horns".
Very on the nose.

Someone needs to bring Jubensha to Europe, I'm super interested in that.

Hi, We’reΒ Rascal, a new, independent, reader-supported, worker-owned outlet for journalism about TTRPGs, actual plays, and the people who make them. We strive to sustainably publish compelling, deeply-reported, and fearlessly honest journalism We’re also a little cheeky.

I borrowed a resin printer from a friend and made my first successful print yesterday. Simple bases for minis are looking good, so I'm hopeful to make some cool minis in the future.

It is so good, loved it!
Not perfect, it has its flaws, but it's so enjoyable, intelligent and emotional. A true breath of fresh air in a stale genre.

Now you're just being obtuse, HP is a term that's in the wide ttrpg lexicon, not just dnd.

Narratively? A multi-stage conflict, resolved through atrition of resources, usualy HP. If the system supports it, it's very enjoyable.

Last wednesday I finished a Vampire the Masquerade 5ed campaign that lasted 16 sessions thru 3 years. Scheduling doom spiral aside, everyone had great fun!
But hours later I realized we forgot about the MacGuffin that started it all! Player's stories became more important, and that's excellent.

Even after getting severely trashed in Ark Nova, I still think it was a great first experience. I call these games a "mountain of cards" and at first they didnt feel great, but I’m steadily changing my mind.
