I tend to agree with your assessment. But at the state level things were a little bit more civil at least into the 70s. Once Reagan showed up, it went off the rails entirely at all levels.

This has been the direction the party has headed for 45 years. So they enabled the current state of affairs through sheer ignorance.

With the election of Ronald Reagan and the rise of the “Moral Majority” combined with the American oligarchy who never went away, it set the table for the GOP of today.

The Republicans who wax poetic about the “old days” simply stopped paying attention to the direction their party was going.

I’ve had this conversation: they adhere to a vision of a Republican Party that no longer exists: that of Nelson Rockefeller.

He would be considered a screaming liberal now: he introduced the abortion rights bill in NYS. He was socially liberal and fiscally conservative.

Our politics are fundamentally corrupt. And our economy is rigged against working people because of this corruption.

The saddest “what if”: Either Hillary Clinton or Kamila Harris would have been an awesome choice for President.

To borrow from that other Queen: they took it as challenge : We go high, They dug out the bottom of a sealed cesspool.

Shocked that the unserious people are coming up with unserious things to fixate.

Well, when you’ve got nothing: the economy is stagnant, gas prices are soaring, your immigration policies are offending even your base, your diplomatic efforts are turning all of your allies against you, and you’ve kicked off a deeply unpopular war, spectacle is all you got.
