Thereβs money in giving children trans hormones
Private clinics are still able to prescribe cross-sex treatments, and indulgent parents are paying for them
The Daily Telegraph11 Mar 2026JOANNA WILLIAMS
Wealthy parents have a new flex: the transgender child. With the NHS ban on puberty blockers now being matched by a pause in prescribing cross-sex hormones to children aged 16 and 17, it is now only rich kids with access to private health care who can afford to transition. While social justice activists complain about inequity, we should reserve our sympathies for the apparently privileged.
Taking cross-sex hormones in the hope of achieving the biologically impossible β to change sex β is no walk in the park. Within weeks of starting medication, youngsters might experience mood swings, acne, fatigue, fluid retention and increased sweating.
Boys taking feminising hormones could suffer from nausea, headaches, dizziness and changes in fat distribution as well as reduced libido and decreased frequency of erections. Meanwhile, girls who want to become boys may have a sore throat and a cracking in their voice, and with an increased appetite, rapidly gain weight. Taken over a longer period, these powerful chemicals can lead to irreversible changes like a deeper voice, breast growth, impotence and infertility.
It is hardly surprising, then, that an independent review commissioned by NHS England found that there is not enough good medical evidence to support prescribing cross-sex hormones to teenagers. Doctors cannot say with certainty that these drugs will benefit gender-confused young people more than they will hurt them. So no new prescriptions will be issued while a consultation is underway.

it's "funny" that this article is going to be used by the most annoying people in the world as proof that human translators go too far and should all be replaced by AI when the complaint is specifically about word-for-word translations that don't go far enough

There's also the fact that Rowling has been fairly explicit that the money she earns through Harry Potter she's putting into anti-trans lobbying efforts.
There's a difference, IMHO, between an artist with a shitty private life, and an artist using their money to fund regressive social change.

Remember that new women's gym owner in London last year who decided to exclude trans women at the last minute? According to this, 5 personal trainers quit within a month, the machines are crap, it smells, sometimes there isn't even water, and it is often empty. 1/

Note the "under-18s" framing here, as an attempt to make it sound like it's not just 16 and 17 year olds, who are old enough to make their own medical decisions based on the Gillick Competence test.
