You know, I would really like a *substantive* discussion, why in the era of increasing lethality of firepower, the only two courses of action available were either a full scale engagement or staying put, without anything in between that could have complicated disengagement for the other side.

DOOM fully rendered in CSS. Every surface is a <div> that has a background image, with a clipping path with 3D transforms applied. Of course CSS does not have a movable camera, so we rotate and translate the scene around the user.

we should make American voters get a tattoo on their arm that says DON'T TRUST THE REPUBLICAN PARTY because otherwise they're basically all that guy from Memento every second election cycle.

EU must stick together against Trump’s hostile tactics, says top diplomat Kaja Kallas says Washington seeks to pick apart European governments which wield less power individually

EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas:
β€œWhat I think is actually important for everybody to understand is that the US has been very clear that they want to divide Europe. They don’t like the European Union”.

The Dardanelles are open for transit, First Lord of the Admiralty Winston Churchill said. "The only thing prohibiting transit in the straits right now is the Ottomans shooting at the fleet," he said. "It is open for transit should the Ottomans not do that."

the administration is playing a game in which it says publicly the war is ending to manage markets and domestic politics while it refuses to actually make any concrete steps toward conflict termination. in fact, it is kicking the can down the road

So it's the 31st MEU from Japan but it won't have significant long-range surface-to-surface fires or more modern air defense (all those have gone to the MLRs). You're really not going to be able to do much with a BLT and one more squadron of air.

Even if you’re of an attritional persuasion, you need to inflict said attrition on your enemy-why bother with the pursuit otherwise. It didn’t have to be an all out assault, but having your enemy in an awkward position and not applying any pressure (other than catching rearguard) was not great.

Bit surprised how many M48s are still around even in the first rate armies-South Korea still has ~400 in storage for mobilization and had them retired from active duty just last year (but since their northern friends still have T-34s stored…).

Fun facts about the military balance in Europe: Poland has about 900 tanks compared to about 700 possessed by Germany, France and the UK combined, but it’s still beaten by Greece (~1400) and Turkey (~2400)-vast majority of those are M48/M60/Leopard 1s though.

We visited the greasy spoon owned by MFS’s auditor (with a mortgage from MFS) Eating a fry-up for breakfast in the name of investigative journalism

Faced with a financial scandal that has ensnared some of the biggest names on Wall Street, I made the obvious move: catching a tube to the end of the Northern Line to eat a fry-up in a greasy spoon.
