「ヤイロチョウ（八色鳥）」です
実在するヤイロチョウ科の鳥類です
全長18㎝程で
様々な色に彩られた美しい羽色をしていることからこの名で呼ばれます
かつては迷鳥とされていましたが
高知県で営巣が確認されたことで夏の渡り鳥だと分かり
同県の県鳥に指定されました
長野県を北限とし
主に西日本で飛来が確認されています
囀りが「白ペン、黒ペン」と聞きなされ
これは作十という猟師が可愛がっていた「白ペン」「黒ペン」という猟犬が行方不明となってしまい
犬の名を呼びながら山中を探し回るうちに息絶え
その魂は鳥に転生し
今も愛犬を探しているという伝承が
高知県中村市（現・四万十市）に存在します
