Was thrilled to help consult for this fantastic John Oliver segment on the tragic plight of U.S. public media and why, if we hope to be a democracy, we still need public media for so many things that commercial media will never provide. Deserves a wide viewership. www.youtube.com/watch?v=yknM...
Despite the importance of data about what happens in public on online platforms, there is no shared framework for how research, journalism, and independent investigations should be conducted with public platform data. The Better Access framework we released today provides that. Incredible work!
A milestone in India: in the electricity sector, non-fossil capacity (renewables, hydro, nuclear) is now larger than fossil capacity.
The Dimitri finds out meme, which is a two panel vertical meme of a guy being interviewed by a lady. The caption reads "The club is bumping, the ladies look good, the alcohol is flowing." The second caption reads "There is much pain in the world, but not in this room."

Whatโs one underrated big idea? The industry we call tech has transformed into media. Their political power comes largely from their role as information gatekeepers. They are the distributors of all content โ entertainment, journalism, criticism โ and we should start thinking of them in that light, rather than as some kind of technical wizards with magical powers.

"We get through most days in life without having to really think about death, which also means that we donโt spend a lot of time dwelling on the remarkable fact that we are alive." Astonishing writing, beautiful piece.
Recalling that time earlier this same year that a gold-medallioned Zuckerberg said Meta would be "getting back to our roots around free expression ... to give people a voice."

So well deserved!! Bridget Everett should've won for writing too, but that was already overdueโi think the toilet/friendship scene from S2 (you know it!) alone deserved an Emmy

In addition to being an awful story about real peopleโs lives, itโs also an amazing microcosm or synechdoche or something for the bigger picture.
A lot of you had questions so I wrote about what I think happened here! Behold:

When we rebuild our public media up from the ashes it will need to be much bigger, bolder, and better funded -- not so dependent on private capital and corporate sponsorships, but truly public. It will need to be more democratic, more independent, and capable of withstanding two-bit fascist regimes.
