‘Tis but a scratch.

A wiring loom for a motorcycle and a continuity tester.

Made a new Y cable for my heated grips and car play unit.

Shrink wrapped everything.

Final test. Continuity on „+“. None on „-“.

Cursed. Sobbed. Cursed again.

Was just about to strip the shrink wrap off when I found out that the battery of the tester had died. Phew!

Great lesson on how not to do it: whoever crimped this cable thought it was a good idea to cram two cables into each side instead of properly slicing the cable. And then there was no more room for the sealing ring. Water crept in and corroded all four cables.

Found out today that it wasn’t the Garmin power supply that went bad… just the auxiliary power connector. There were two pairs of wire, for GPS and heated grips. When the heated grips stopped working on my last ride, I knew that I had to dig deeper into the wiring.

Maybe you’re right… the Zumo 345 just really bugs me with all the little things that just don’t work right and can really mess up a carefully planned trip. I guess the Zumo XT2 is better, but it’s also the most expensive option (unless we‘re talking Carpe Iter and other high end solutions).

Using the phone itself is not an option I really consider. I rely too much on its features to put it on the handlebars during all kinds of weather.

CarPlay does not mirror the phone screen. It requires apps to provide a dedicated UI, so it isn’t more distracting than a satnav.

A CarPlay unit would probably solve all of this and add integration with other apps like Spotify or Weather, with the downside of draining the phone battery. But I can charge my phone while riding, so that would be ok I guess.

Any recommendations or tips? (3/3)

The Zumo 345 has very few „pros“ (weather resistance, independent from my phone) and lots of „cons“ (slow, low-resolution screen, being forced to use BaseCamp for planning, bad waypoint recognition, bad at adapting the route to road closures or just changing it on the road). (2/3)

Looks as if the power supply of my satnav has kicked the bucket. Fuses and 12V in are ok, but no output.

Two options: fix it for ~45€ (new power supply) or finally upgrade to a Carpuride CarPlay unit (160€ and up).
