I realized today that the distance between my house and the house my dad lived in means that when I hit the Jon Bon Jovi rest stop on the Parkway, I am quite literally halfway there.

Statement from Rep. Ilhan Omar on Trumpβs Illegal War on Iran βPresident Trump is unilaterally dragging this nation into an illegal and unjustified war with Iran without congressional authorization, without a clear objective, and without any imminent threat to the United States. This is a reckless abuse of power that puts both innocent civilians and American lives on the line for a conflict the American people do not want. βAs someone who has survived the horrors of war, I know that bombs do not build peace or create stability. Military strikes will not make us safer; they will inflame tensions and push the region further into chaos. When we abandon diplomacy, we choose destruction.
βWe know who will bear the cost of this decision: innocent civilians caught in the crossfire and our young service members sent into harmβs way. This is the devastating human toll of another regime-change war. Already, children and families are paying with their lives. There is no moral or strategic justification for this bloodshed. βThe American people are exhausted by endless wars built on false promises and paid for with American and foreign lives. Congress must reassert its constitutional authority. We must vote immediately on the War Powers resolution authored by Reps. Ro Khanna and Thomas Massie. This unlawful operation must end immediately."
so in conclusion, the state of the union is actually very bad because a man who tried to end democracy is using the government to personally enrich himself and his buddies while executing citizens and noncitizens alike
Still remember the feeling of watching the Dawson's Creek pilot at age 15, on the phone with my friend Scott. And the appointment viewing of Season 4 with my freshman floormates.
Godspeed, James Van Der Beek. Grateful for your spirit, humor, and grace.
Weβre going to destroy this fucking disease one day. I know it. Letβs make it happen.
If you haven't had the chance to see The Librarians yet, catch Kim Snyderβs powerful documentary when it premieres February 9 on Independent Lens on PBS.

[Mr. Mamdani] was βvery excited to see so much enthusiasm about using the resources of the public library.β π
I looooved All the Blues in the Sky!!!! I read so few books that were eligible for these awards but a few of my favorites won or were honored and I am delighted.
Candace Fleming winning two lifetime achievement awards in the same year is kind of funny but also extremely well deserved.
I loved Sisters in the Wind and especially Song of a Blackbird. #printz
Great day for Candace Fleming! #alaymaawards
Woo hoo! Jewel Parker Rhodes! #alaymaawards
This is what 7 House Democrats voted with Republicans to fund. This is what Hakeem Jeffries didn't whip votes against. This is what Gavin Newsom said *wasn't* fascism.
Anyone who doesn't commit to abolishing ICE should lose their job.
bro thereβs a gofundme to crowdfund attorney fees for a preschooler who was kidnapped by our federal government and shipped across state lines and his senator is posting about high school hockey while every other elected official is debating whether to give a zillion more dollars to the kidnappers

Abolish ICE. Destroy their weapons and melt down their equipment. Deny their agents, employees, and bosses all government employment for all time. Remove the agency entirely from the budget and give the money to public libraries and free health care.

NJ has been crystal clear, we will not capitulate to authoritarianism.
Gov Murphy, I ask again, please sign the 3 bills of the Immigrant Protections package, as is, no changes.
What if he invades Minnesota
For anyone interested in knowing more about her life, the YA biography Claudette Colvin: Twice Toward Justice by Phillip Hoose is excellent.
U.S. citizen detained by ICE:
ββ¦they finally told me that they could offer undocumented family members of mine legal protection if I have anyβ¦or money, in exchange for giving them the names of protest organizers, or undocumented persons. I was shocked, and told them no.β
I went through a movie buff phase around 25 years ago but barely watch any now. Every time I watch an awards show I think that I should put more effort in.
Abolish and prosecute ICE. They did a murder in broad daylight today. Imagine what they're doing in the closed facilities we're somehow not even allowed to see.
there should be a "good morning" feed on bluesky where you're not immediately thrown headfirst into the worst news imaginable while you're still half asleep
In another sign of how far ALA has fallen, I just realized I hadn't heard about the shortlists for YALSA's Morris Award and Non-Fiction Award. Tried to browse the website but had to google the awards specifically for 2026 to find press releases with the titles.

Favorite books I read this year. I only read 70 books which is pretty low for me and most of these I read at the beginning of the year since I haven't been in a reading mood. They are ordered approximately in the order I enjoyed them.
The insane "news" propaganda my dad watches non-stop is literally on a 15 minute loop. Easy to think crime is up when you hear about one carjacking 100 times a day for five days in a row.
Dealing with an elderly parent who is coming to the end of being able to care for himself would be a hell of a lot easier if I didn't have to listen to that stupid motherfucker on top volume from across the house.
I love pulling holds the day after family holidays because you know many of the books were requested after someone's effusive recommendation over dinner. #libraries
