LANDIS-II Virtual Training Workshop in May!
May 13, 15, 20, and 22 from 8a - 12p Pacific.
This is a fast-paced, hands-on virtual workshop designed to give new users the background they need to start running LANDIS-II. Participation is capped at 20.
Cost: $500 USD (Credit Card or Check only)
So grateful for your leadership
Map of Western US showing snow-water equivalent by basin. Most basins are well below the historical median with the Northwest, Great Basin, NorCal, and the Southwest all below 50% of historical averages.
OK, as we go into February, I'm officially worried about our snowpack numbers across the Western US. Less snow means dryer soils and fuels heading into the summer and I don't like fire years where the high country comes online early.
LOL
Oof! You can't survive in any workplace if you say everything you think. And I'm glad I know now that you're socially maligned

Congrats!!!
Totally!!
Resolution: Make time to curl up with your loved ones
Just saw this new paper by Tang et al. out of NCAR :/... Excited to check it out!
Emissions from burned structures in wildfires as significant yet unaccounted sources of US air pollution

FEM and STOTEN
We submitted a LANDIS-II paper, but they are excluding all modeling studies.
Yet another journal rejects modeling papers.
"is assigning low priority to studies of this nature (e.g., bench-scale experiments, modeling-focused studies...)"
In these chaotic scientific times, they're rejecting all studies using an acceptable scientific tool?
So... annoyed.
Excited to give a talk on #LANDIS_ii wildfire modeling with @robertscheller.bsky.social tomorrow!
Time I got to do a review=10 days. Time it took a journal to make a decision about my paper= 6 months.
Please give reviewers at least 2 weeks. We are volunteering our time!
Because every research lab website should give a shoutout to the real MVPsβour petsβfor supporting us during these challenging times.

This term speaks to me-
βcredentialism,β by which women hoped that if they accrued enough credentials, their gender became irrelevant. (It did not.)
One of the best parts of science is working with smart, wonderful collaborators. Burn table experiments with Lisa Ellsworth today @oregonstate.edu

Gross chocolate bunny
What's the most disgusting thing you've found in the lab you inherited? π
Summer #TEEL_Lab cleaning today revealed this tasty chocolate bunny that pre-dated me (at least 5yo).
Our fun field day taught me:
1) upland ash exist (i.e. its not just a stream tree),
2) poison oak likes to hang out with ash,
3) baking soda helps to relieve itching of poison oak.

NSF, NASA and NIH budgets per year, inflation adjusted from 2000-2025 along with the proposed cuts. NSF includes research component only. Massive cuts across all sectors, well below support spanning 25 years.
How bad will it be? Catastrophic.
Proposed cuts to #NSF, #NIH, and #NASA will set the US R&D landscape back 25 yrs+, cause economic and job loss now, and undermine innovations to come.
But, this is the WH's *proposed* budget.
Speak up now before it is too late.
