Non Natives are kind of inside the matrix on this. They're placed above us so they view any resistance to their dominance as violence.
Adorno did work on this in the 50s. It was part of his analysis of fascists. He found that they were sadomasochistic and believed in rigid hierarchies that permitted abuse of those beneath you and acceptance of abuse from those above you.
