NEW REPORT - Capital at risk
London is a global capital. But it doesn't have the governance to match. The Mayor is much less powerful than his international counterparts, with too many boroughs which hold too much influence. The city needs reboot.

A fiscal devolution revolution - Re:State
Ahead of this afternoonβs Budget, the promise of a new tourist tax looks like progress β but it barely scratches the surface.
Research Assistant, Laxshia Ganesharatnam, writes about the gulf between one revenue stream and meaningful fiscal devolution.

The Chancellor can't just offer jam today - Re:State
At some point we have to *actually* take tough public spending decisions
Promising cash today for reform tomorrow is irresponsible (see blog)
I hope the Budget has some rabbits but right now it looks like further expanding an increasingly unsustainable welfare state

So proud of the team today. First place for Think Tanker and second for Think Tank of the Year.
We're a tiny (9 people), scrappy think tank with limited resources, risking saying what we really think.
Hall of Famer Dirk Nowitzki once described JJ Barea as 'undersized, but all heart'.
That's us.

There is a common misconception that moving care into the community should be done by physically moving hospital services into community services - that's not the answer
Moving care into the home is
That's what a virtual hospital does

Hospitals are struggling with productivity. That means fewer patients seen and treated.
This new paper from @floconway.bsky.social and @rosiebeacon.bsky.social lays out the quick wins that automation could deliver - not only for productivity but also patient safety and workforce satisfaction π

The hospital is a unique economic unit. Incredibly understudied, even in an NHS which has accidentally (and incorrectly) been plugging more and more resource into secondary care over the last two decades. Automation has huge potential.
Great new paper today from the team.

I'm all for professionalising the role of Special Advisers, e.g. with much better admin support. But the civil service can only do so much - politicians need to lead.
In 'Grown up government' @re-state.bsky.social argued for a new model, with more Spads, paid better
