This is an excellent summary by someone who has extensive knowledge of this stuff. Highlight recommend both this one and his previous post.
We really *do* need experts to help us understand and manage hazards. (go figure!)
For any candidate hoping for my vote my first question will be, “How did you respond on June 12th?”
Whets my “appetite”. 🙂 Thanks for the chance to relisten and enjoy!
Yikes!
A screenshot of NASA's carbon dioxide vital sign. A graph shows CO2 climbing ever higher, based on atmospheric measurements since 1958. The most recent data point is from April 2025, at 430 ppm, which is an all-time record since measurements began. In fact, every year brings a new all-time record, because we are failing to limit CO2 emissions.
I just updated NASA's CO2 dashboard. In April, CO2 reached a new high, averaging 430 ppm over the month.
In fact, every year CO2 reaches a new record high because we are failing to reduce emissions.
These measurements began in 1958, and the line only gets steeper.
This is really bad.
A medium size black dog on a leash on a grassy hiking trail under a blustery sky. The dog is looking over a section of natural prairie that was recently subjected to a controlled burn.
A Cooper’s hawk sits atop a house intended for blue birds. The bird house is a small wooden box mounted on a tall steel post about 1.5 meters above the ground in a grassy field abutting a wooded area.
Sun rays shine through a stand of white pine trees on a foggy morning. Part of a house is visible in the picture as well as a grassy lawn, some garden implements, and bird feeders.

I like calling them Instagram loaves but posting here.
Pass it on.

I did before the election. Best part: I haven’t missed it one bit.
Scientists & experts! Here's a simple action you can do today.
Add your name to this open letter calling on Congress and the Trump administration to ensure that NOAA remains fully funded and staffed, and that the independent, trusted science NOAA produces is protected. act.ucsusa.org/4kajJuk
I wrote this NASA page about wildfires and climate change, and I'm so excited it's finally live. It's a tireless effort to get big pages published at NASA - as it should be!
How long will it remain up? Who knows. Check it out while you still can. 🧪 #climatesky

Trump announces 500B in AI funding. Five days ago.
Deepseek r1 release. 8 days ago.
The fact that Deepseek R1 was released three days /before/ Stargate means these guys stood in front of Trump and said they needed half a trillion dollars while they knew R1 was open source and trained for $5M.
Beautiful.
Not sure it fits your needs exactly it I’ve used glass Xmas tree ornaments with matte metal deposited on the outside. The one source I found stopped making them. I found that the very shiny ones are usually coated on the inside and also that the coating on plastic ones was not conductive.
Trying to stay positive! A loaf of sourdough and off I go for a bit of xc skiing.
This was a tough week to be working in the federal government (NASA). But in my non-government work, we had an excellent conversation about how fossil fuel money is pumped into our government - mostly to republicans. You can already see the benefits gifted to Big Oil by the new administration.
If she can do it, we can all do it.
I went outside and it felt warm. Turns out it is currently 52° F warmer here than it was yesterday morning. Let’s hear it for ΔT!
Awful. I’m sorry you and your students (and the whole country) have to deal with this.
Coil springs generally do have constant pull force. Investigating this is a great idea!
We have to define what we mean by “AI.” Because the model that advanced our understanding of protein folding and the LLMs that churn out the nonsense slop that fills the internet both get called “AI.” And the latter is co-opting the usefulness of the former to create this exactly perception.
Happy Hanukkah to all my friends who celebrate!
You likely already considered this but if not, check to see if you can test for PFAS.
That’s the general consensus I’m told.
Images using an infrared camera show a human wearing a down insulated jacket and a live chicken. In both cases the head and face glows brightly showing warmth and the body is darker showing less heat radiating due to the insulation.
Fun with an inexpensive IR camera 🧪⚛️ #EduSky
