The Essence of a Machine I didn’t really want to do a quick breezy review of something that has touched me at a deep emotional level. Yes, I am talking about the new MacBook Neo. I can’t remember when I used the words β€œcut…

The launch of MacBook Neo has me feeling a little philosophical. About Heidegger. About missing Steve Jobs. About Aristotle and the sheer joy of colors. In the end, this is my essay about the essence of a machine. om.co/2026/03/10/t...

Have you looked at the shortcuts app? There's a TON of configurations in there - I'd say good odds can set up a sequence of shortcuts to do it automatically.

Also, I've been wondering about the idea of linking driving licence renewals with an online theory test.

Many drivers (maybe most) don't know some basic rules such as parking opposite a solid white line, and that >15m crossing rule, who has right of way when there's an obstruction on one side, etc

05.03.2026 23:55 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

I'm mainly asking about this as it's far from my personal experience.

Very often when I begin to cross an 'empty' road, a driver enters the roadway from a distant side street and then speeds towards me.

My understanding is that I've right of way, but I'm never certain.

05.03.2026 23:55 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

And does the pedestrian (walking as a right versus driving under licence) have right of way?

Ie once I've started to cross (>15m from a crossing), a driver in the distance should yield to me - even if it means greatly slowing or fully stopping as required so that I feel fully comfortable crossing?

05.03.2026 20:50 πŸ‘ 0 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

@cianginty.bsky.social Do I have this right?

A person (a pedestrian) can cross a road anywhere once they're not within 15m of a crossing, and once they do so safely.

Does that apply to zebra crossings also?

I'd pay €1500 maybe.

I'd only use it for consumption, and barely get opportunities to watch TV on my own as it is, and rarely travel long-distance.

I'd pay up to €2000, though - an early adopter premium.

At the moment it's not available in Ireland. But it would cost about €5000 today if it was.

Dublin City has about 6% the population of New York City and has begun an initial €10m rollout of hangars such as these.

In that context, a €21m (US$25) commitment seems very unambitious?

Sam Altman tweet:

Tonight, we reached an agreement with the Department of War to deploy our models in their classified network.

In all of our interactions, the DoW displayed a deep respect for safety and a desire to partner to achieve the best possible outcome.

AI safety and wide distribution of benefits are the core of our mission. Two of our most important safety principles are prohibitions on domestic mass surveillance and human responsibility for the use of force, including for autonomous weapon systems. The DoW agrees with these principles, reflects them in law and policy, and we put them into our agreement.

We also will build technical safeguards to ensure our models behave as they should, which the DoW also wanted. We will deploy FDEs to help with our models and to ensure their safety, we will deploy on cloud networks only.

We are asking the DoW to offer these same terms to all AI companies, which in our opinion we think everyone should be willing to accept. We have expressed our strong desire to see things de-escalate away from legal and governmental actions and towards reasonable agreements.

We remain committed to serve all of humanity as best we can. The world is a complicated, messy, and sometimes dangerous place.

Department of Transport u-turns on mandatory helmets and high-vis forΒ cyclists Mandatory helmets and high-vis for cyclists are now not being looked at by the Government, the Department of Transport has confirmed. The introduction of mandatory Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) for bicycle users is "outside the scope of the current measures" being looked at by the Government, a Department of Transport spokesperson has said this afternoon. The Department issued what it terms a 'clarification' about 24 hours after it said that bicycles were included in a move to make helmets and high-vis mandatory for e-, and hours after the TΓ‘naiste, Simon Harris, contradicted the Department's statement from yesterday.

Apart from the various reasons that you've listed in that doc, it's also a really terrible way to present your service to the public and potential customers.

All they see about your brand in their timeline is negative.

Trying to fit too many things into existing spaces is a habit that people tend to fall into.

The city has lots of space, throughout, just generally hidden in plain sight.
