The laws of war exist to protect civilians. But even when the rules are followed, civilians are harmed. That's why we're calling on the UK government to strengthen its approach to civilian harm mitigation and response.
I sat in on the Defence Committee last week as former ministers were questioned about the MoD's Afghan data breach.

Drawing on lessons from the US and the Netherlands, the report provides concrete recommendations to the UK government and MoD and urges immediate action.
Civilian protection is scattered across a patchwork of ad hoc policies, doctrines, and operational practices, containing promising elements but leaving significant gaps.

βI do not see why Parliament was not read in to the situationβ¦ so they could exercise that oversight and scrutinyβ
Mike Martin MP says the Afghan data leak + superinjunction expose a wider MoD culture of cover-up. Without democratic scrutiny, accountability suffers. Afghanistan is a case in point.
Our partner, Volodymyr Shcherbachenko, speaking to Times Radio: "I do believe in justice... It's a huge amount of money, frozen russian assets, they are available, and this money can be used for #reparations for civilians."
