For the last few years, my “research” has consisted of thought pieces and synthesis. It’s been good work, but it’s not new.

This week, I received IRB approval to begin a new research project. Something original will soon be coming to this space.

Yes. This is the hidden relational cost that so many of my female colleagues have to pay. I see it happening around me, and I fight it when I can, but I’m probably only seeing the tip of the iceberg.

It’s January. I’m flying to Wichita for my grandfather’s funeral. The next gate over is going to Cancun. My family members need to start dying in warmer climes. Fairly certain my grandfather would have agreed.

Alas, I remain stuck in the beautiful PNW.

So I teach at a Catholic university, and I know we’re hiring in your field. I really doubt it’s us, but you are getting my hopes up just a bit.

He taught at McPherson College

My grandfather died today. He was 96. He spent 50 years as an English professor in a small-town Kansas college. He introduced me to Wendell Berry. He held his beliefs loosely, meaning that he was filled with wonder and awe by things he didn’t understand. He was gentle and kind. #academicsky
