John Blanchard (American, act, early 19th century) Thomas Howland, 1850-56 Oil on wood Property of the Rhode Island Historical Society (Museum Collection), Providence Thomas Howland, the subject of this unusually expressive portrait, was a dock worker in Providence, Rhode Island. In 1857 he became the city's first Black elected official when he was named warden of its Third Ward. However, that same year he decided to emigrate to Liberia with his wife and daughter, perhaps in response to the recent Supreme Court decision in the Dred Scott case that denied African Americans the protections of U.S. citizenship. Because of this decision, Howland's application for a passport was denied, despite his status as a free man with the right to vote in his home state (he did eventually make it to Liberia). Howland's confident posture echoes that of the earlier Portrait of a Gentleman shown nearby, the fashionable attire of both sitters serving to reinforce their self-possession. No matter how many more armed men Trump sends to impose his will on the people of Minnesota, all he can do is accentuate their valor. No application of armed violence can make the men with guns as heroic as the people who choose to stand in their path with empty hands in defense of their neighbors. These agents, and the president who sent them, are no one's heroes, no one's saviors— just men with guns who have to hide their faces to shoot a mom the face, and a nurse in the back.

Last I knew there were about 70 Somali Bantu (indigenous) farmers in Maine. Some have been working with Maine Farmland Trust to lease or lease-to-own farmland from people who are unable or unwilling to farm anymore.

Trump's hostility toward Europe has little to do with his absurd and irrational arguments over Greenland. It has everything to do with his efforts to undermine democracy and move this country and the world toward authoritarianism. Trump does not like free elections, a free media or the right of people to dissent. That is why he hates Europe, with its strong democratic governance, social safety net, and commitment to peacefully resolving disputes. That is why he is sending ICE to invade American cities. Let's be clear. Trump would prefer the world to be ruled by his fellow multi-billionaire oligarchs, like his good friends in Saudi Arabia and Russia. These dictators crush political dissent, jail their opponents, and engage in massive kleptocracy. This year we will mark an important anniversary: two hundred and fifty years ago, extraordinarily brave Americans ushered in a new era in world history when they declared: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness." Then, fighting in a very bloody war for their freedom, thousands of them died as they defeated the most powerful autocrat in the world, King George III. In the centuries since, many hundreds of thousands of Americans have died to defend those ideals of freedom and democracy. As patriotic Americans who believe in our Constitution and the rule of law, we will stand with those heroes and heroines who gave their lives to defend our freedoms. Now, in this dangerous moment in American history, it is imperative that all of us, regardless of our political views, come together to confront the grave threat of authoritarianism.
