Opinion | On Roe, Alito cites a judge who treated women as witches and property
Sir Matthew Hale, a 17th-century jurist, has been endlessly quoted by American judges and lawyers, with awful repercussions for women.
On this day in 1662, Judge Matthew Hale began presiding over a witchcraft trial in England. He ultimately sentenced 2 "witches" to death. Spoiler: They weren’t really witches.
While overruling Roe, the Sup Ct repeatedly cited Hale as a “great” & “eminent” legal authority. #WeTheMen

New SAVE Act Bills Would Still Block Millions of Americans From Voting
The “show your papers” requirement is an attack on the freedom to vote.
On this International Women's Day, Senate Republicans are pushing for the SAVE Act, which the House already passed. The Act would disenfranchise millions of Americans, including millions of American women who changed their name after marrying. #WeTheMen

Today is International Women’s Day. That’s a good time to remember that Congress has never designated a legal public holiday—the kind that closes federal offices—to celebrate an important woman in American history. #WeTheMen

The Statues Were Mostly Men or Nude Women. So These Knitters Got to Work.
As in the United States, commemorations in Denmark overwhelmingly remember men. To the extent there are public statues of women, they often feature fictional and/or nude characters.
These Danish women staged a brilliant response.

We are in for a very, very long haul . . .
I am asking for EVERYTHING YOU HAVE TO GIVE
We will never give up . . .
You will lose your YOUTH, your SLEEP,
your PATIENCE, your Sense of HUMOR
and occasionally . . . the understanding and support
of people that you LOVE very much.
IN RETURN, I have nothing to offer you but . . .
your PRIDE in being a woman, and
all your DREAMS you’ve ever had for your daughters,
and nieces, and granddaughters . . .
your FUTURE
and the certain KNOWLEDGE that
at the end of your days
you will be able to look back and say that
ONCE in your life
you gave EVERYTHING you had
FOR JUSTICE.
