(PDF) Effect Size Thresholds in Early Literacy: Defining Benchmarks for Phonemic Awareness Research PDF | Effect size (ES) helps assess intervention effectiveness, often interpreted using Cohen’s thresholds for small (0.20), medium (0.50), and large... | Find, read and cite all the research you need...

❓What if the β€œsmall-medium-large” effect sizes we use in early literacy aren’t right for this field?

We derived empirical thresholds from recent PA meta-analyses.
Cohen’s cutoffs fit PA but overestimate reading by ~0.2 SD.

This matters for judging impact and powering trials.

An NIH grant I was on as a postdoc helped us understand why some children develop reading difficulties while others don't.

Our current NIH grant examines whether Spanish-speaking bilingual learners in πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ struggle with reading due to a reading disability or language differences btwn English&Spanish.
