After seeing 12-packs of this priced at $13.99 earlier today at the grocery store - I'll have to pass.

I am seeing job ads for professors to work in AI departments and programs. They are currently adding "AI Literacy" requirements and I have never seen curriculum change happen so fast. This feels unprecedented.

I ack in 1995, I wonder if academia embraced the Internet as swiftly and strongly as it has #genai. Were departments of the Internet started back then? Was there a rush to start Internet literacy requirements?

I'm sure many of you have heard by now that earlier this week, IU k*lled the print edition of its student paper, the IDS. The issue that was supposed to print this week contained criticism of the Whitten regime and IUs further slide into scist control, and they couldn't allow that to happen during Homecoming, when all the rich alumni are in town.
Enter Purdue! The Purdue student paper, The Exponent, owns its own presses. Yesterday, in an act of tremendous solidarity with their biggest rival school, they printed the forbidden issue of the IDS. They then drove it to Bloomington overnight and stocked all of the IDS boxes on campus, just in time for Homecoming.
Solidarity is what makes us stronger, and solidarity will be what ultimately allows us to triumph, if we can ever truly get it together. I hope everyone has a fun, safe day if they're going out today, and I hope we can think about what acts of solidarity we can begin taking to really make this movement MOVE - beyond a permitted expression of upset into more active resistance.

Purdue to the rescue of IU student newspaper, whose institution was attempting censorship. Details in alt!

A striking thing about articles I’ve read claiming to β€œstudy the effects” of generative AI on student writing skills and consumption of information is that (1) they nearly always find the effects are negative and (2) most β€œconclusions” are still written assuming that we must use AI, for some reason.

I'll be splitting time between CHI and W Lafayette. It's about a 2 hour drive one way, plus a time zone. (For those of you keeping track, my previous commute wound up being about 1.5 hours one way.)

I am happy to report I will be teaching at Purdue as a full-time Lecturer for the Professional Writing program starting this fall. That's where I earned my PhD in rhetoric. So, a little like "Welcome Back, Kotter."

This whole thread - yes. I am so concerned about generative AI and am alarmed at how it's being crammed down our digital throats.

We don't need more data centers, this addiction to computer solutionism is psychotic and does not work. It literally makes every problem we face dramatically worse.

Really misread the embroidery pattern's source. It's Needles 'N Hoops! 😳

The 1980s seemed to be a time when fashion from other periods came back, makes sense typefaces designed then might harken back to earlier decades.

Before opening the frame, I guestimated this came from the 1980s. Just a hunch. On to see if I can find the pattern!

I'm pausing this project. I have archival framing tape but no archival cardboard to wrap the embroidery in. Leaving it in the frame, I'll see if the piece needs to be washed. Hope it won't. You can see damage to the fabric from the cellophane tape used in the original framing.

The vintage embroidery was custom framed by a company called Madigan. The cross stitch itself appears to be a copyrighted design by Stitches N Loops. The typeface on the framing paper looks almost Art Deco to me, it could be a logo designed in the 30s or 40s & used up into the 50s.

Vintage cross stitch 8" x 10" in a frame. Embroidered text reads "the early bird gets his own breakfast". Image of a sleeping kitty next to a food bowl labeled "kitty" - a bird, possibly a robin, is perched on the bowl and eating the kibble contained within.

My amateur attempt at vintage embroidery preservation. Found this cute piece of vintage cross stitch in a frame that makes my hands feel dirty whenever I handle it.

Close-up. Maybe too close! I bought the fabric online and was pleased how well the cream fabric coordinated with the prints. #quiltsky

Time to start lesson planning for fall. Here's my most recent quilt top! Pattern is called "Four Square" by Cath Derksema and Kristen Junior from the book "Easy Quilt Projects." Directions called for 4.5" squares, I used 5", because I love the print so much. #quiltsky
