🚨Two fully funded PhD opportunities in Australia!
Improving C4 photosynthesis in vegetation models.
Supervised by Dani Way (ANU, Canberra) and myself (UTS, Sydney).
1. Lab- and field-based project at ANU – see flyer below
2. Modelling project at UTS – www.findaphd.com/phds/project...

A picture is worth 1000 words...
This appeared on the BBC News today, showing the increase in solar electric generation in the UK.
Not sure who produced it, but genuinely think this is a genius piece of scientific communication - the construct and choice of colour scale is near-perfect.
Chapeau!

NASA map shows temperatures up to 160 degrees on Phoenix streets, sidewalks
Data from June 19, when the daily high was 106 degrees, shows asphalt across the city that day was between 120 and 160 degrees.
IMPORTANT: NASA map shows temperatures of up to 160 degrees on Phoenix streets & sidewalks. All that unrelenting concrete and asphalt for cars. Not nearly enough trees. They start with ridiculous heat that’s only getting worse with the #ClimateCrisis, and then make it much worse with bad design.

A chlorophyll fluorescence-based biofeedback system was developed to adjust LED intensity based on real-time plant responses, rather than using a fixed photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD). The system was tested in a growth chamber with lettuce and cucumber.

Alpine forests face collapse without urgent reforestation, say scientists
Bushfires and a lack of seed have created a "ticking time bomb" in Victoria's alpine and mountain ash forests, scientists are warning.
"It isn't that the alarm bells are about to ring. They already have & if these last 2 fires are not enough to scare the pants off you, I don't know what is."
VIC's mountain forests are on the brink of collapse due to frequent bushfires & lack of regeneration support.

I got hit by some rather sudden and extreme financial hardship so if anyone is in need of remote wetlab contract research, strictly BSL1, do let me know. Currently scrambling for gigs.

We use an O2 sensitive flurophore system which can do hundreds of leaf discs per day or a differential O2 analyser made by qubit + a licor 7000 for open flow O2 and CO2. A few people in the building use Mims but not super often

Ahh I remember that manual Ali or at least the beard - some people here have used them a fair bit in the past, but we’ve switched to much higher throughput methods for O2 measurements

I guess they kinda sniff leaves! They measure leaf gas exchange, so we can see how much photosynthesis or respiration the leaves are doing.

Massive blue box, being freed from customs
Three LICORs
Finally all the kit arrived after being freed from customs and I’ve started measurements in the wonderful Desert Botanical gardens in Phoenix. Very very warm!
