Over-simplify people's identities and gender. Bakla just is the more modern word that has inherited aspects of the pre-colonial identity that went by other names.

But yes, it is 100% correct to say historical Filipino gender identities were much more fluid than the binary that was forced on us.

I just wanted to bring this up because it is a very real contention in various spaces (from academic to grassroots communities) to have bakla be conflated with trans and how that can flatten and sometimes>

I'm totally down with the sentiment here, and I didn't wanna be a downer, but while that is a theory that sounds like it makes sense, there are other more substantive etymologies of the word.

It also isn't explicitly trans. Effeminate cis men absolutely fall under bakla.
