I think people aren't just abstracting "patterns", unadulterated patterns aren't out in nature, "patterns" are mediated by "biologies" or its in silico equivalent.
From my undergrad phil there was a Nietzsche essay that vividly described a version of this point.

I think of this as as the context for Elinor Ostrom's "Governing the Commons". People can govern common resources but only when they are in a community appropriately designed: bounded, with lots of monitoring and escalating strategies conflict resolution, these are conditions to isolate jerks.
If I want to do calculations reasonably fast I use 20th century computing...
If I want to do calculations very fast I use 17th century mathematics...
Then again, if I want to do calculations wrong I use 21st century computing.
