Poster for the iatefl ltsig open forum on a session to be held on 22 Feb 2025 online titled: beyond the algorithm. Empowering a critical perspective on AI bias.
Excited to be speaking at the Online Iatefl #LTSIG Open Forum about addressing AI bias. Itβs time to move the conversation beyond shiny AI tools and focus on helping students engage more critically with AI.

"The trick of finding writing time is to make writing time in the life you've already got. That's where you've got leverage. Stop imagining some other life as a "real" writer's life".

Thanks, Peter. Iβll look them up. I also built a Wordpress site but through BlueHost. They are good in general but overly expensive. Iβll check out Siteground ππΌ
Thanks, Matt. Iβm with BlueHost and they charge me about Β£240 annually which is excessive for what I use the site for. Plus, they wonβt let me downgrade! Thatβs why Iβm looking for other options. I can design a website, but my skills arenβt super advanced.
Great advice about academic publishing. And it extends to other measurable end-of-year targets too. Rushing to βtick the boxβ before the holidays may lead to burnout, not quality. A rested brain in the new year will probably bring better ideas and better results.

Thatβs good news!
Thanks Matt! I do need my domain name for flexibility but will look into WordPress to see if they offer more affordable hosting options.
I see. I wonder if there are cheaper solutions for a portfolio only website.
(2/2) I may go back to blogging/ microblogging, but should I leave my own site given the cost doesnβt feel like value for money and try Substack instead? Has anyone abandoned their own site and found happiness writing on Substack? Would love to hear your thoughts π€

Iβve been giving this more thought and am currently flirting with the idea of moving to #Substack. I have a self-hosted website where I used to blog, but my host provider has become overly expensive. Right now I mainly use it as a portfolio for edu clients to see my work and contact me (1/2)ππ»
π±π horrible to see what is happening to our friends and colleagues in UKHE. Some of the hardest working, good people I know. It just keeps getting worse and worse.
Starter pack with #ELT #TESOL #appliedlinguistics peeps to follow. You can follow individuals or the whole list. Add a comment with your bluesky handle if you want to be included. Hopefully organisations will be migrating here π¦ as well. go.bsky.app/L9JMNA6
Thanks, hun π€. Same for our uni but I need next week to wrap up some last-minute work on projects I couldnβt get to during the term. Then itβs two weeks offπ. And next term, no teaching (just projects and research). Canβt wait for the holidays!

New Cambridge Element free to read+download for 4 weeks! A useful read for understanding plagiarism in L2 writing, although Iβd expected more on how digital & postdigital landscapes challenge notions of originality & authorship.

Well done you! One more week to go for me, but Iβve already completed teaching my TESOL module, which was my only teaching this term. Feels like the holiday is within reach!
Thanks Matt! My pleasure π
Clearly we needed this word.
A selfie taken from a low angle showing a person wearing a thick hooded coat lined with fur, smiling against a backdrop of bare winter trees and an overcast sky. The person looks warmly wrapped up for a cold day.
Wrapped up to the max for my daily walk today. 6Β°C but feels like -1 according to my weather app! Iβm not a cold weather person, but I love the crisp fresh air and the warmth of my cosy house waiting for me after βοΈπ₯ #DailyWalks #Leicester #UK
Sounds very interesting! Thanks so much, Peter ππΌ
Yes please ππΌ . Iβve just followed you. I think I created my profile a year or so ago but couldnβt find people to follow and have 0 followers and 0 interaction. How do I start? Looking for relevant hashtags and follow people who use them?
You mentioned that before and I think Iβll follow your lead.
Hmm this doesnβt sound good π€! But it concludes that βBluesky may eventually experiment with ads in a way that doesnβt compromise the core user experienceβ. Curious to see what that might look like.
Thereβs a lot of truth in this. COVID was a collective trauma we were never given time to process. Instead, we snapped back to βnormalβ even though things are far from normal. In education, the load hasnβt lightened, it keeps growing, and every new challenge adds to it. #EduSky
Haha, same here! Iβm nearing the end of my findings write-up, but the struggle is real in this final stretch π€ͺ
Mine has the crΓ¨me de la crΓ¨me darling π - though about 5 people I didnβt know at all asked me to add them, and I just did based on profile.
I know I need to write today, but I just canβt seem to get going. Yesterday was a disaster writing-wise (though otherwise, it was a lovely day) #AcademicSky
