The words "crevasse" and "crevice" both come from the Old French verb crever, which means "to break or burst". The main difference between the two words is the size of the opening they refer to.

But they are similar because of the etymological origin.

Crevice = smol crack
Crevasse = massive crack

** the basics on phonetics were touched on very briefly in a very accessible and easy to understand way, it was more of a superficial topic rather than an actual class of phonetics, which wouldn't make sense for someone just starting out.

Regarding phonetics and phonology, we went over some basics such as a tones and word stress, in order to help her achive a natural rythm and cadence when speaking this new lanuage, as well as helping her practice hearing things the way she would in real life scenarios.

I will continue to plan an A1-A2 course for her, with focus on daily social interactions, practicing listening comprehension as well as working on speaking and of course using exercises to re-train the vocal muscles in order to achive correct tongue positioning in the mouth and thus good phonology.

BUT since I only have 3 finals to sit now, I thought wth? Why not?! So I said yes - and today, we had our first class!!

It went so well. She told me she needed to start from the beggining so we did, starting with some basic grettings and manners, this is very important since she's in Ireland now.

She texted me saying she wanted to have lessons with me again because she liked the way I taught ๐Ÿ˜ญ

It had been a while since the last time I did tutoring because I have been focusing on uni for the past 2 years.

Remember this girl from last week? She had previously been a student of mine but she had to quit because of work-related reasons.

๐Ÿ’Œuni updates:

GPA: my GPA was soo good throughout the year that I didn't have to sit any finals besides 3 mandatory ones, so out of 10 subjects, only 3 finals yayyy!!

FB: today I was given feedback on one of the last exams I sat, I passed with 90%!!

+ I now only have to sit 3/10(!!) finals!! All of which are actually mandatory and I can't "GPA my way through it" and end the year without a final.

This just goes to show hard work pays off, I'm so tired now, but my holidays will be nice and long!!

+ hand them in on time.

On the other hand, I still have to hand in my final assignment for Reverse Translation which is due tomorrow - and therefore, tomorrow's problem ๐Ÿ˜‹

However, besides being so busy and tired, I do actually have good news! Due to my good grades throughout the year, +

๐Ÿ’Œ #Study update:

Okay guys, first time writing a post in like 2 days maybe?

I was less active since I was SUPER busy with uni - as you know I sat my oral Lit. exam on Tuesday and then I had until today to hand in two more exams from Public Translation - thankfully I managed to finish them and +

29.11.2024 22:23 ๐Ÿ‘ 5 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

yes I was wondering if there was like a "one word" translation like we were looking for "hygge" - I think ideas can be explained and translated to another language but I think that's different from having a direct, equivalent, single-word translation which would need a linguistic connection "bts"

29.11.2024 22:10 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

decoracion de sobremesa is definitely very different to sobremesa on its own but okay lol thanks for your imput ๐Ÿ‘Œ

29.11.2024 21:48 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Well, I am tellig you I am reffering the OTHER meaning of 'sobremesa', specifically the one I described to you before - and I was wondering how you would translate that? what English word do you think would fit the description best? And again, no, I am not talking about a centre piece..... ๐Ÿคฃ๐Ÿคฃ

29.11.2024 21:47 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

'centre-piece' is 'centro de mesa'

29.11.2024 20:08 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

No, it's the act of having a conversation on the table for a long period of time after a meal over, it's a very common thing in South American and maybe the rest of LATAM but idk that tbh

What word would you use in english to translate the word "sobremesa" from Spanish?

29.11.2024 19:57 ๐Ÿ‘ 0 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

LMFAOOOO

- on Emmas's skeet to the Ephesians:

29.11.2024 19:56 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

on Paul's letter to the Ephesians. In Latin, the proverb is โ€œNoli equi dentes inspicere donatiโ€ (never inspect the teeth of a given horse).

So, basically, latin - ahh I love languages and playing guess and learning #langsky

29.11.2024 19:55 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

from a very superficial research i quickly did since you showed interested in languages hehe, I found that obvs both idioms mean the same in both languages - and apparently the orgin is this:

The phrase, โ€œdon't look a gift horse in the mouthโ€ originates in St. Jerome's commentary (400 AD) ..+

29.11.2024 19:55 ๐Ÿ‘ 2 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

now I don't know!! because these languages are not even linguistically related, so unless it comes from latin, i'd be too stunned to speak -- i'll have to research it later!! ๐Ÿคฉ๐Ÿค“๐Ÿ˜

omg so it exists in English how cool! It's basically a literal translation -- SO cool ๐Ÿ˜
