confusing everyone in the poker chat by not knowing how to describe an open straight draw and calling it a "two-sided wait"

shoving all-in and declaring riichi. calling pon on the turn card. i don't know what game I'm playing anymore

ultimately there is no real appetite in the ecosystem for particularly serious critique of even moderately visible indies. what people want is to hear about all the cool games coming out with breathless enthusiasm so they can ignore all of them and play slay the spire two instead.

japanese dreamcast has an extremely sick slip cover but other than that idk I don't think version choice matters all that much

the unaltered cutscenes are interesting to contrast with later releases but it's like two scenes in a relatively long game you can just look them up later

i have played every released version of code veronica on every platform and I couldn't impart to you any huge differences between them. versions that have X in the title have cutscenes added and some slightly altered but nothing that alters the overall picture very much.

do whatever is convenient

So, "SchrΓΆdinger no neko" isn't up your alley? How about a fully 3D JRPG about an amnesiac siren? This is "Shinkai densetsu Meremanoid". Already hacked the thing, got a half-width font, script dumped, the whole kit and caboodle.

Ping me if you know Japanese and want to translate it!

Post image Individually, a person who plays fighting games may have a bunch of different complicated nuanced motivations and emotions that are served by different parts of the fighting game experienceβ€Šβ€”β€Šnot limited to the game itself on their console, but the broader journey of mastery and connectivity. The high-minded ideal FGC stuff I mentioned above is real and does exist! It just doesn’t exist enough to sell the millions of copies that go into funding the next Street Fighter or Tekken. At scale, building and selling games as a service looks a lot more like making a theme park or a casino, where you have customers entering at a given point, you give them choices on what kind of experience they can have in your game, and you give them clear signs and paths to choose from in order to make it easy for them.

In the above section, we established that people play video games because they want to feel something specific. It’s a brief moment of agency in a day where you were otherwise probably at the mercy of some stupid bullshit at your job, or at school, or in your family, or on the bus, or whatever. We spend most of our day pushing the boulder up, and the brief moment of rest we get is choosing the video game we play in between eating dinner and going to sleep, where we get to act like the person we imagine ourselves to be as the boulder rolls back down the hill.

"Why ranked sucks and we can't get rid of it"

Wrote about how fighting games rely on ranked matchmaking to retain players even though it often makes the experience worse. Read this to learn about friction, addiction, motivation, and how you can Ranked responsibly.

the ps1 resident evil trilogy is genuinely one of the most incredible achievements in video games just three radically different interpretations of an extremely strong core idea leading to some of the most infinitely replayable games ever. and capcom is in 2026 mostly embarassed about this

on that note I'm going to critique an indie game. Scott Pilgrim EX is Very Okay, I Guess idk. I need to replay the original at some point to draw better comparisons.

09.03.2026 16:35 πŸ‘ 36 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 0 πŸ“Œ 0

despite everything I still hope that guy is doing ok? i am a little bitter about that interaction but I'm not so spiteful that I want his career destroyed over it, despite accusations that I had "harassed them out of game development" for the crime of not liking one release.

09.03.2026 15:59 πŸ‘ 1 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

every dev wants feedback. but indie devs are people. and some people can and will react poorly if you tell them their baby is a bit shit and by proxy that being the likely reason for it not doing numbers. many think they're ready, but aren't. and saying it makes you look bad, so why bother?

09.03.2026 15:57 πŸ‘ 64 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 3 πŸ“Œ 0

I literally just scrolled by a post where some random was getting mad about a negative review being "unfair" for an indie game *they had not even played*

People will defend the honour of the little guy but will simultaneously not actually engage with the game in question, it's a bad environment!

09.03.2026 15:55 πŸ‘ 66 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

and I'm pretty small-time? I've ran aground of these issues simply because I fastiduously leave Steam reviews/post about damn near every game I ever play. a writer for a major publication is gonna get soooooooo much heat if they acted even vaguely similarly

09.03.2026 15:48 πŸ‘ 54 πŸ” 1 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

in that sort of environment where it's pretty easy for someone to whip up some anger about "gamers being mean", no wonder people don't really take to critiquing indie games all too seriously unless they already meet some threshold of success that suddenly makes it ok to take a comb to a game.

09.03.2026 15:45 πŸ‘ 57 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

at least one dev blame *me personally* publicly for their game's poor commercial performance and while I think they were simply having an emotional outburst and blamed the first prominent negative take they clapped eyes on and later wised up, I still never exactly got like, an apology for that

09.03.2026 15:42 πŸ‘ 74 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 2 πŸ“Œ 0

it is not really any wonder then that people take a "if you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all" approach

because you're allowed to have whatever dumb opinion you like about even an AA game, but a negative opinion on an indie expressed on too public a platform comes off like bullying

09.03.2026 15:40 πŸ‘ 74 πŸ” 0 πŸ’¬ 1 πŸ“Œ 0

i think I'm a bit late to this particular discourse but it's all well and good to say "we should critique indie games properly and not use kid gloves"

but my personal experience with covering indie games negatively is that multiple devs have had meltdowns at me and I was accused of harassment lol

09.03.2026 15:39 πŸ‘ 176 πŸ” 25 πŸ’¬ 7 πŸ“Œ 0

the funny thing is that even if you actually do "onboard" (i spent 5 minutes explaining what the distinction between a "dating sim" and a visual novel was once, a distinction core to the thesis of that video), some people will still whine at you anyway because they think they know! (they don't)
