The last thing the North Inner City needs is more casinos preying on our communities. A casino that is already in breach of their planning conditions should definitely not be allowed to expand further into a residential area.

Research is not a ‘gig economy’
Green Party responds to Trinity funding loss

Following the announcement that up to 150 research positions at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) are at risk, the Green Party has called for a fundamental overhaul of the Government’s approach to research funding.

Speaking on the immediate uncertainty facing researchers in Ireland, Green Party Spokesperson for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science and Councillor for Stillorgan, Eva Dowling said:

“Research should not be treated like a ‘gig economy’. The situation at Trinity College Dublin is the direct result of a fundamental flaw in how the Government treats research, science and innovation. Successive ministers have prioritised short-term 'ribbon-cutting' exercises over building a robust, world-class research ecosystem.

I have written to the Minister asking that he engage with the affected research staff, universities and unions urgently. The ongoing uncertainty in the science community is unacceptable. ”

Green Party Leader Roderic O’Gorman TD added:

“Ireland punches above its weight when it comes to excellence in research but we cannot build a sustainable knowledge economy on a precarious funding model.

Countries we admire like Denmark and Switzerland have built thriving indigenous research, startup and enterprise sectors with: strong doctoral pipelines; deep public-private collaboration; and a national commitment to translating research into home-grown companies. To make this possible we need a robust, sustainable long-term commitment to funding research across all disciplines, making research a viable career path for graduates in Ireland.”

Cork hill highlights the limits of democracy in the digital age Everyday frictions over traffic, housing and local planning are exposing a growing tension across Ireland and Europe between democratic decision-making and the power of global technology companies.

Thanks to Jack McCarron and the team on RTÉ Prime Time for reporting on this small example of one of the biggest questions of our time.

Who controls our streets and public spaces? Local authorities — or tech authorities far away and unanswerable (it seems) to anyone.

A Green Party NI campaign graphic. The background features two photographs: Infrastructure Minister Liz Kimmins on the right, wearing a light blue blazer with a serious expression, photographed outdoors; and Environment Minister Andrew Muir on the left, wearing a blue shirt and olive bow tie with round glasses, also photographed outdoors against a blurred natural background. Between them, a screengrab of an Irish News article headline reads: “Stormont departments ‘unprincipled’ and ‘gaslighting’ on A5 road, judge says.” The lower half features a solid blue panel with large bold white text reading: “Unlawful. Undeliverable. Twenty years wasted. A judge called it gaslighting.” The Green Party logo appears centrally below, followed by the imprint: “Published & Promoted by Green Party NI, PO Box 369, Bangor, BT20 9FJ.”

A High Court judge this week accused Stormont’s own departments of being “unprincipled” and “gaslighting” the court. Not our characterisation - the judge’s.

Reaching net zero by 2050 ‘cheaper for UK than one fossil fuel crisis’ Climate change committee finds move to renewable energy would also bring health, economic and security benefits

Our dependency on fossil fuels makes us vulnerable. Wars across the world are pushing up prices for households in the UK.

Why keep waiting for the next crisis? We need to transition to clean power as fast as we can to protect people and our economy.

It’s not rocket science: with oil and gas prices on the rise, governments must boost home-grown renewables and reduce our dependence on the Middle East for our energy needs.

Dublin builds too many hotels — and nowhere near enough homes.

The Greens want to change the city tax system to fix that.

Double the tax on new hotels, use the money to cut tax on new homes. 🏘️🏘️🏘️

The expansion of 24-hour bus services in Dublin in recent years has been a game changer - giving people more routes home and saving them money.

I think a simple diversion of the 39A night time services would allow even more people in the Blanchardstown area to use the route.

25+ years derelict. In Dublin City Council ownership since 2019. No funding from the Department of Housing to rebuild.

The two derelict houses on 19 & 21 Connaught Street have been abandoned by the state. They're now structurally compromised and a risk to the neighbouring houses on the terrace.

Why would we expand our imports of fossil fuels, when we can see how war makes prices shoot up? Clean, green renewable energy is a better option - for energy independence, for the planet, and for our pockets.

A political quote graphic from Green Party NI. The background photograph shows solar panels in the foreground and a tall wind turbine rising against a partly cloudy blue sky, set in a green field. The image conveys clean, modern renewable energy infrastructure. Large white quotation marks appear in the upper left corner. A thin white rectangular border frames the image. In large bold white text: “Renewable energy is the cheapest in history. Heat pumps, solar, and retrofits create thousands of local jobs that can’t be outsourced, lower bills permanently, and end our exposure to foreign price shocks.” Below the quote, in bold white: “Cllr Áine Groogan” and beneath that in regular white text: “Botanic, Belfast.” At the bottom centre, the Green Party Northern Ireland logo — a green leaf beside “greenparty” in white, with “NORTHERN IRELAND” beneath in smaller text.

We are two rainy, windswept islands. Wind and rain are not problems here - they are resources.

Energy independence is not a distant aspiration. It is sitting above our heads every single day, going to waste.

Statement on Rotunda Hospital Remaining in Parnell Square accompanied by an RTÉ headline Government drops plan to move Rotunda to Connolly Hospital

As a board member of the hospital, I welcome the decision by Government to drop the planned relocation of the Rotunda to Connolly hospital. The Rotunda has been at the heart of Dublin City for over 280 years, and is a key part of the inner city's built and social heritage.

Women deserve quality healthcare, in a hospital that is up to the highest standards. A new planning application must be submitted as soon as possible for the critical care unit expansion, so that mothers and new born babies can receive the care they deserve in an appropriate, fit for purpose setting.

A story in the Irish Times. "A busy school, just one bike outside: Why so few children cycle in one Dublin suburb. Green Party councillor says "a proper cycle lane" must be "good enough for a 12-year old" to use

The article goes on to talk about the cycle lane being proposed for Chapelizod Road and Conyngham Road. Positive as that is, it doesn't address the issue in the article - there is no safe way to cycle through the village itself

In the depths of a housing crisis, Dublin needs homes, not AirBnBs.

Managed to get an application for a full-time AirBnB in the Liberties rejected so that it'll be a home instead.

If you know of an illegal AirBnB in your area, drop me a message and we'll get on it.
