The original expression was "tomber dans les pâmes" - "pâmer" being an archaic French verb which meant "to faint". At this point, nothing to do with apples whatsoever.

But over time misuse gave way to convention and "pâmes" became "pommes", the accepted spelling 🍎

If having Mana in s6 wasn't really your thing, I think you might enjoy 2007 version (season 5). Its formula loosely follows the original's "helping random people" shtick while also having standalone episodes experiencing yokai's daily live at Yokai Yokocho.

I'd also suggest Gegege no Kitaro, but only if something of that nature is up your alley.
2018's version is available with English translation. Not sure of the others tho 😅
