I asked CPhO for England David Webb about rumoured plans to deliver NHS weight loss jabs through community pharmacy.
He said the service would be delivered through general practice in the first instance, but there is an βambitionβ to explore other routes of delivery.

Community pharmacies have been delivering medicated weight management services, alongside lifestyle advice and support, for years, so the sector says it's well placed to deliver NHS-commissioned services.

Seen media reports about weight-loss jabs being available on the NHS from high-street pharmacies? The government confirmed that these reports are 'speculative' but England's community pharmacy negotiator told us that it would be open to discussing such a plan.

It was fascinating to speak to leaders within the sector about what this could look like for contractors.

Please give it a read - hopefully stories like these can help expose the urgency of the situation facing the community pharmacy sector in England, which days away from the next financial year still has no new funding agreement for 2024/25 or 2025/26.
It was a privilege to hear and share the stories of three pharmacy owners making impossible decisions about maintaining patient access to healthcare in the short term or paying themselves a salary, spending time with their families and keeping their business afloat in the longer term.
Reducing the pharmacy's opening hours in line with the NPA's call to action would βseverely inconvenienceβ patients, Kevin says.
But while he's 'reluctant to do it', 'if there's no money to pay the bills, then I have to cut costs', he adds.

At 8:30 on a Saturday morning in a small town in County Durham, a queue is already forming outside contractor Kevin Simpson's pharmacy.
Within an hour, 'there'll be 20 people stood waiting for attention', Kevin tells The Pharmacist.
But NPA chair Nick Kaye said the βideal situationβ would be that βa great funding deal comes out in the next three daysβ, and pharmacies do not need to take action.

This could see NPA pharmacies give notice from 1 April that they will reduce their opening hours to core contractual minimums.
Reduced opening hours could then begin after the five week notice period, from 6 May.
The National Pharmacy Association (NPA) has advised its members in England to reduce their opening hours, as a funding deal for the sector has still not yet been announced.
