It is part of a series of eight paintings that depict the moral decline and fall of Tom Rakewell, the spendthrift son of a wealthy merchant. In this particular scene, Hogarth portrays the excesses of the time, showing a chaotic and debauched party where the attendees are engaged in various states of drunkenness and revelry. The scene is meant to illustrate the consequences of a life of extravagance and vice, with figures in various stages of inebriation, some unconscious, others engaging in lewd behavior, and the general disarray of the room. This work is a critique of the moral and social decay Hogarth observed in 18th-century London.
