With winter winding down (I hope!), it's time to start planning for the coming field season. And that includes the Canadian Botanical Association conference: June 2-5 in Ottawa, Ontario. Still a few more weeks to get the early-bird discount!

A daffodil, backlit, with the floral tube dissected to show the pistil. The style runs upwards through the flower, and the ovules are visible in the inferior ovary, sitting below the attachment point of the petals.

An old field at sunrise, looking through a patch of wild carrot stems. The flowers are long past, the branches of the umbel have folded up around the ripe seeds. The winter wind will rock the stems, shaking the seeds loose over the course of the winter.

Two heavily-dressed women standing on a trail of loosely-packed snow between a stand of spruce trees. The branches are heavy with snow, which is deep on the ground, with large flakes floating downward through the trees.
