Oz being a warped surreal version of Harlem was so fun. Munchkin land being a public park, the spooky woods being a labyrinthine subway system, the flying monkeys being a biker gang. The Sleeping Poppy Field being reinterpreted as a red light district was definitely a choice. Ofc with Diana Ross and Michael Jackson the soundtrack was going to be sublime. Closing of the movie with Home 🤌🏾. I really wish The Wicked Witch of The West had more of a presence beyond just 10 minutes in the 3rd act, she was so much fun and her song was such a bop.
I wanted to get to a blaxploitation movie before black history month ended and I already had my eye on The Wiz for some time with MICHAEL JACKSON and DIANA ROSS in the cast
The Wizard of Oz lent itself very well to an African American context, I especially loved the setting
