The goal is to know that if you can't hit bedrock, that's okay - your goal is to dig deep enough to support the height and weight of your structure. The higher you build, the broader and more rigorous and deeper your foundation is required to be.

But the foundation is just as exciting as the top!

The curse of the researcher is to never hit bedrock. There’s always another layer and another until you arrive at “EVERYTHING IS RELATED TO EVERYTHING ELSE” which isn’t terribly useful very often.

This is very broad strokes stuff but that's why so much western narratives about AI are actually narratives of the fear of the plantation owner of the slave uprising. Soviet scifi had a wholly different premise, Japanese scifi has a different attitude towards technology and intelligence than the US.

What I was trying to get at, at the time, is that the origin of science fiction in the US is coming out of the pulps and a lot of the pulps are coming out of colonial narratives. The fear of AI or space aliens isn't far removed from the colonial narratives of the fear of native reprisals on settlers

A lot of the original lines for that stuff if I remember right, or don't mix up my history too badly, was laid with the telegraph lines which were run by the rail lines which were built on the cities that were the forts that were built on the settler caravan paths west, which is wild.

So in order to explain a key point, I ended up doing a lot of reading into the construction of the physical infrastructure of telecommunications and how that was actually a seriously meaningful thing politically. That influenced the direction of all US speculative fiction, thus its political lean.
