My grandma, the sole survivor of her entire family, was 14 when the war ended, a teenage refugee with nothing, no one, and nowhere that wanted her. She was able to stowaway on a ship to Israel where she lived on a kibbutz and became a nurse.
The little sister was too young to hide there, and so was caught with my great-grandma and they were murdered in Auschwitz gas chambers together. My great-grandpa died of disease in hiding.
