omg i just realized we are like 30 messages deep in an unrelated thread
i have to say my eye first read it as "quis(quis) amat valeat perreatque"
the 2nd one would be an elegiac couplet if it started with "quisquis" instead of "quis" ... i wonder if part of it got cut off or somebody was just remembering a verse badly
oh no, looks like we are two lines off with the translation on this one 😓 i am looking into it
Mum reports heavy snow in northern Tehran today, and with the fuel shortage (US blew up 30 reserve fuel tankers around the city…), the municipality cannot run the snowplows. So grocery & other delivery services have been interrupted. I hope the electricity does not cut off in the snow.
Photo of a cuneiform tablet fragment shaped a bit like an irregular diamond. It preserves nearly 20 incomplete lines of text separated by a horizontal ruling
There's a broken cuneiform tablet from the Old Babylonian period, nearly 4,000 years ago, which preserves a tiny portion of a dialogue between two friends.
It feels a bit like the conversations I've been having for the past week, so I wanted to share it.
Hey y'all, as you know, I am now unemployed. A few people have reached out to offer me some money to ease my financial anxiety, but the thing is, I still have a decent amount of runway. My friend below however does not and needs $750 by end of month. So I wanted to redirect ppl to her.
Eventually this will come back to haunt us
Tweet from Rep. Andy Ogles: "Muslims don't belong in American society. Pluralism is a lie."
Obviously the extreme bigotry against Muslims is more than enough reason to oppose this, but it's worth noting that this is also an attack on the very basic principle of religious pluralism that has made the US a comparatively safe place for Diaspora Jews.
nice, thanks!!
just wondering, are there any languages whose main word for "whisper" doesn't contain /s/ or /ʃ/ or a similar voiceless sibilant?

i really liked Pimsleur, the one time i used it (it basically let me jump straight into 2nd-semester Turkish), and your review pretty much agrees with my memories. it's great for practicing and reinforcing basic conversation structures to the point where you know them in your sleep
i didn't know it was feminine! i see -el and assume masculine. so Fäckel
Latest attacks in Lebanon leave nearly 400 dead as two Israeli soldiers killed
Maybe the most impressive headline distortionism I've ever seen
same as was the goal in Gaza. these are crimes against humanity
This is what the United States and Israel have done for the living conditions of 10 million people in Tehran. There's no 'peace plan' here. The apparent goal is to create conditions unsuitable for civilian life.
the toddler and i were playing Minecraft with the UI set to German and we needed to talk about Fackel ("torch")—a new word for both of us, i assume—in the plural.
i found out later that my guess for how to say it was wrong and hers was right 😑 wtf man
In Palestine, Lebanon, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Congo — mothers are mourning their babies.
Resharing this piece I wrote over two years ago because we’re still watching a genocide happen, watching even more parents mourn.
Women’s day includes these women too.

Do I know anyone in Istanbul who can do me a huge favour in the next few days? It relates to my mother.
caŋgalaŋ [tsàŋgàlàŋ] 'empty'
ceŋgeleŋ [tʃɛ̀ŋgɛ̀lɛ̀ŋ] 'empty and small'
coŋgoluŋ [tsɔ̀ŋgʷɔ̀lɔŋgʷ] 'empty and big'
Works in verbs, too: From kwacay [ákʷàtsāj] 'to cut up, tear apart', palatalization gives you kwecey [ɛ́kʷɛ̀tʃēj] 'divide or give out in small pieces'.
In Muyang (Central Chadic), you can apparently use word-level palatalization to create diminutives and labialization to create augmentatives. The morphologization of kiki-bouba.
If 176 children were slaughtered in their classrooms in Dublin, Brussels, Berlin, Tel Aviv or Texas by a foreign adversary, the world would rightfully be at a standstill.

New video footage shows a US Tomahawk missile hitting an IRGC facility in Minab, Iran, on Feb 28, showing for the first time that the US struck the area. The footage also shows smoke already rising from the vicinity of the girls’ school, where 175 people were reportedly killed, including children.
Pretty serious allegation here. "Witnesses told the BBC that the Israeli soldiers had arrived disguised in Lebanese military fatigues and used ambulances with signs of Hezbollah's Islamic Health Organization."

What people in Tehran woke up to. They are breathing this now.
This war has to end before it’s too late for all of us.

Finally got my mitts on Ekkehard Wolff's "A Historical Phonology of Central Chadic" and I have so many thoughts, most of them positive. Does anyone here have access to a scan of Gravina's CC classification papers from 2007 and 2011 in "Topics in Chadic Linguistics" they might send my way?
