It's absolutely bonkers that we learned with clarity that we can dramatically reduce or even possibly eliminate many respiratory viruses & we choose to embrace them instead.

The image shows two figures, a and b. Figure a shows a map of Europe with thermal positions indicated by color-coded hexagons, ranging from -1.0 to 1.0. Arrows point to "Reduced negative impacts" and "Increased negative impacts." Figure b shows a scatter plot of effect size vs thermal position with a fish illustration on top. "Biomass change estimates" indicated by circle size.

A study published in Nature Ecology & Evolution reports that long-term ocean warming reduces global fish biomass by up to 19.8% annually. Warmer years and marine heatwaves were linked to sharp biomass losses of up to 43.4%. go.nature.com/40b6AIB ๐Ÿงช ๐ŸŒ

I am still actively looking for postdoc positions โ€” please lmk if you (or your friends and colleagues) need a hardworking postdoc with field, lab, and bioinformatic skills!

I am broadly interested in evolution in the ocean, conservation and population genetics, and rapid evolution.

๐Ÿšจ Paper Alert!

In 2023, Mexican coral reefs experienced an unprecedented bleaching event.

But bleaching wasnโ€™t the biggest issue.

Our study in Proceedings B @royalsociety.org shows a marine heatwave caused massive coral mortality and pushed reefs from production to net erosion

I used to waste years preparing gourmet meals. It was creative, an expression of my humanity, and fostered zen.

Thanks to McDonalds, I don't have to do that!

Polymarket has created a betting market on the use of nuclear weapons. Everyone involved in this should be put in prison for life.

Global fertilizer market on edge as Strait of Hormuz closure puts sulfur supply and phosphate production at risk - Brownfield Ag News An economist with the Fertilizer Institute says half of global sulfur exports need to move through the Strait of Hormuz and its closure could have long-term impacts on the fertilizer industry. Veronic...

Phosphate fertilizers are produced using sulfuric acid and that sulfur comes from oil distillation. In addition to direct exports of P fertilizer being disrupted by the regional war in the Middle East, supply chains will be adversely impacted by oil markets.

Measles cases in the US are surging to levels not seen in decades. By week 9 of 2026, the US has already reported around 1,200 cases, putting this year on pace to blow past 2025's alarming total of 2,200+ cases. A disease we nearly eliminated is making a comeback.

Ah, thanks for the precision, I did not read the article ;-)

So if I understand correctly from this graph :

Below 0 = it did not improve as much as what was expected considering past trends = points are below the expectation line (+ grey shadow)

03.03.2026 10:42 ๐Ÿ‘ 1 ๐Ÿ” 0 ๐Ÿ’ฌ 1 ๐Ÿ“Œ 0

Below the 0 line = life expectancy is still lower than before 2020.

The public and commentators need to stop thinking about "wars for oil" as about securing oil for the U.S., it's been decades since that was a motivator. "Wars for oil" are instead about securing oil for oil companies, securing a fossil fueled global economy, and denying oil's wealth to "enemies."

I hate the way normal historic NYC winter weather for late February is now rightly understood as a โ€œcold snap.โ€

How has the planet changed THIS MUCH just in my lifetime?? Iโ€™m not *that* old. And this is geological. And thereโ€™s no end in sight.

Itโ€™s really fucking terrifying.

Has it occurred to anybody that Trumps Iranian war ploy greatly benefits his friends in the domestic US oil and gas production industry? Fracked oil and gas requires high prices to be economic, and at current prices it's barely profitable, if that.
